Bizau combines trails through its cultural landscape with church history and seasonal winter activities. Depending on when you travel, you can consider hiking, cross-country skiing or a ski tour; the traditional Bizauer Kilbe festival also provides a recurring date in September.

Hiking Trails and Cultural Landscape

The Wege des Umgang Bregenzerwald trails use around ten information pillars to draw attention to buildings, features of the cultural landscape, and details of traditional crafts or ecology. Alongside the landscape itself, the details highlighted by the pillars are therefore part of the thematic perspective on the surroundings.

An approximate time is given for the barefoot trail: the round trip takes about an hour. If you are looking for a time estimate for an outing, this gives you a way to gauge this particular trail. The Moosrunde trail leads into the Bizauer Moos. The typical “Hag”—a fence—and the litter meadows there are well worth seeing.

The Geißerweg, a themed trail that can be explored as part of a guided hike, lies above Bizau. The trails described therefore differ in their focus: the approximate round-trip duration is given for the barefoot trail, the Geißerweg combines its theme with a guided hike, and the Moosrunde leads into the Bizauer Moos.

Accessible parking spaces for wheelchair users are available in Bizau village centre. If accessibility is a key factor in your plans, check the situation when you arrive.

Church and Traditional Festival

Bizau’s parish church is dedicated to Saint Valentine. The parish also has a specific historical milestone: in 1684, after separating from the mother church, Bizau became an independent parish. The dedication describes the church’s religious affiliation, while the year marks the later establishment of the independent parish.

The traditional Bizauer Kilbe festival takes place in Bizau every year on the first Sunday in September. Together with the history of the parish, this gives a different perspective on time than the trails: one is tied to a historical date, the other to a recurring point in the annual calendar.

Cross-Country Skiing and Ski Touring in Winter

Bizau has around 8.5 kilometres of cross-country and skating trails. The trails in the neighbouring communities of Reuthe and Bezau are connected to the Bizau trail, making around 33 kilometres of cross-country skiing available in total. The shorter distance refers to Bizau, while the longer one covers the connected trail network. Trail availability depends on winter conditions.

The Hirschberg is a popular destination for ski tourers. After the ascent, ski tourers descend through the slopes and over former ski runs on touring skis and skins. This winter activity also depends on seasonal snow conditions. Cross-country skiing and ski touring thus differ not only in the activity described, but also in whether the information concerns trail distance or an ascent followed by a descent.

The different measurements can help with planning your time: an approximate round-trip duration is given for the barefoot trail, while distances are given for cross-country skiing. In Bizau, that is around 8.5 kilometres; the connected trail network with Reuthe and Bezau covers around 33 kilometres in total. Duration and distance describe different aspects, so they cannot be directly compared as equivalent measures of effort.
