Faschina: Hiking Trails, Nature and Winter Experiences
Accommodation in Faschina
In Faschina, trails with different focuses sit alongside nature and cultural themes, as well as designated winter activities. The flower nature trail starts at a mountain station, the marmot trail focuses on the animals, and the route around Sonnenköpfle passes several named places. This lets you tailor your stay to the themes that interest you most.
Hiking trails with their own routes
The route around Sonnenköpfle starts at Faschinajoch and leads via Stafelalpe and Fatnella Alpe towards Fontanella and Säge. It then ends back at Faschinajoch. The sequence of places gives you a clear overview of the route: it starts and ends at Faschinajoch, with named stops along the way towards Fontanella and Säge.
The flower nature trail in Faschina starts at the middle station of the Stafelalpe chairlift. In summer, the two-seater chairlift takes you to an elevation of 1,780 m or 1,865 m. The seasonal operating schedule is relevant to your journey; check the current timetable before planning. The “Faschina Passhöhe/Seilbahnen” stop on Landbus route L570 provides access to the Kleine Faschinarunde. Here, too, it is advisable to check the timetable before travelling.
Nature and things to discover along the way
The Faschina Marmot Trail brings marmots and marbles together in a playful way. This interactive family trail combines exercise, nature experiences and learning; seven stations guide you through a day in the life of the animals. This gives it a different focus from the flower nature trail: here, the storytelling connection between wildlife and marbles takes centre stage, while the other trail starts at the middle station of the Stafelalpe chairlift.
Hahnenkopf also offers a botanical focus. The area’s geological conditions have given rise to an exceptional diversity of plant life. The area around Hahnenkopf, on the northern edge of the Großes Walsertal Biosphere Reserve, is home to over 150 plant species. Here, geology and plant life are directly connected.
Swings are located at the middle station of the Stafelalpe panoramic cable car. Designed as art installations set in the natural surroundings of a mountain landscape, they add an artistic perspective to the nature-related themes. The swings are at this middle station; their location is distinct from the botanical information about Hahnenkopf.
St. Anna Chapel and winter trails
St. Anna Chapel in Faschina was built around 1700 as an endowment by Josef Hartmann, who was born in Fontanella. For a winter visit, a short, groomed snow trail leads from the car park at Faschinapass to the chapel. The historical background and the route described offer two different points of reference: one places the chapel in its historical context, while the other describes access in winter.
There are designated practice areas for first attempts on skis or a snowboard in Damüls, Mellau and Faschina. They are characterised by easy lifts and gently sloping hills. Lift operations and snow conditions depend on the season and should be taken into account when planning a winter visit. Faschina also has a designated Hahnenkopf Süd ski route, listed as the Faschina–Fontanella connection.
