Weyregg Am Attersee lies on the eastern shore of Lake Attersee, at the foot of the Höllengebirge/Hongar cultural and landscape park. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay on Lake Attersee, the town’s distinctive themes help you get your bearings: Weyregg brings together traces of the pile-dwelling era and the Romans, an aquarium, the public lido, and places to visit for astronomy and regional history.

Pile-Dwelling Era and Roman Traces

In Weyregg Bay, remains of Austria’s largest known pile-dwelling village lie on the lakebed between the landing stage and Steinwandeck to the south. Remains of a Roman harbour facility can also still be seen in the area of today’s landing stage. The remains of a Roman luxury villa with several mosaic floors suggest that the tradition of summer retreats on Lake Attersee most likely dates back to the Romans.

The Roman exhibition is located in the former post office of Weyregg Am Attersee municipal offices. It features a 3D model of a Roman luxury villa overlooking the lake, as well as display cases with finds from the excavations. Access is subject to the municipal offices’ opening hours; as schedules may change, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

Attersee Aquarium and Public Lido

The Attersee Aquarium is in Weyregg, right next to the music pavilion. It is 4.5 metres long and holds 9,000 litres of water. The many fish from Lake Attersee on display include pike, pearl roach, perch, bleak, lake trout, roach and rudd. Alongside the historical themes, you can also get a closer look at the lake’s fish life.

The public lido in Weyregg has two bathing jetties, a water trampoline, a children’s playground, restroom facilities and changing cabins. If you plan to visit the lido, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

Observatory and Places to Visit

Gahberg Observatory is located on Gahberg at an altitude of 860 metres and can be reached from Weyregg in about ten minutes by car. Parking is available in the immediate vicinity of the observatory. Its specialised telescopes are used to observe the Moon, planets, the Sun and faint objects, as well as for astrophotography using conventional and digital photography. This makes it a different kind of outing from the Attersee Aquarium: here, the focus is on observing and photographing the sky; there, on fish from the lake.

A hike leads from Weyregg Am Attersee to the Bruckbacher Hoarstube. On a guided tour, you can learn about the former importance of flax in the region. This is another aspect of regional history, this time centred on the former importance of flax.
