Seewalchen Am Attersee: Pile-Dwelling History, Klimt and Moorland
Accommodation in Seewalchen Am Attersee
Seewalchen Am Attersee offers a range of attractions: cultural history, a walking trail following in the footsteps of Gustav Klimt, Gerlhamer Moor and activities on Lake Attersee. When planning your trip, you can decide which themes are most important to you.
Cultural History and Gustav Klimt
The parish church of St. James & St. Margaret was built between 1439 and 1476. The head of a Roman tombstone is built into its north side. This means that a medieval building and a fragment of a Roman tombstone stand side by side at the church—two different historical connections in one place.
The pile-dwelling pavilion “Adventure Pile-Dwelling – Seewalchen Pavilion” offers a different way to explore the past: visitors can step into the role of a prehistoric person and explore what they did and how they lived. The focus is therefore not only on viewing historical evidence, but also on engaging with the lives of people in earlier times.
The Gustav Klimt Trail is a walking route along Lake Attersee that follows in the footsteps of the Art Nouveau painter. Numerous information boards tell visitors about Klimt’s stays in the region. They also lead to places where many of his landscape paintings were created, especially around Litzlberg, Kammer and Weißenbach. The trail thus combines the lakeside landscape with information about the painter and his ties to the region.
To reach the trail, travelers from Vienna, Linz or Salzburg can take the train to Attnang-Puchheim and then continue by bus to Kammer or Seewalchen AgerbrĂĽcke. Check current train and bus timetables before your trip.
Gerlhamer Moor: Habitat and Guided Tours
Gerlhamer Moor, also known as “Gföhret,” is a 12-hectare fen. It formed when a post-glacial lake gradually silted up. The Gerlhamer Moor European protected area (FFH site, AT3140000) is a small-scale transition and fen area, with significant populations of several plant species listed on Upper Austria’s Red List. The moor has been a nature reserve since 1993.
Rare plants that grow in Gerlhamer Moor include sundew, globeflower and cotton grass.
Those who would like to explore the moor on a guided tour are personally shown around the area by Gerli, the Moor Witch. Group tours are arranged by appointment. The ÖNJ Vöcklabruck also runs guided moor tours and workshops at the Gerlham Moor Forge under the title “Nails with Heads.” Participation is arranged through the local contact. The two options offer different ways to explore the area: a personal guided tour of the moor, or an experience that combines a tour and a workshop.
More Destinations on Lake Attersee
The lido in Seewalchen has a 10-meter diving tower from which you can jump straight into Lake Attersee. For a different perspective on the lake, you can take a boat back on the “Seewalchen – Haining – Buchberg – Attersee” route: the North Round Trip runs from Attersee to Seewalchen. Check the boat timetable before making plans.
The Attersee high ropes course is located at Haining 63, 4863 Seewalchen am Attersee. Along with the lido and the option of returning by boat, it adds further places to visit to the cultural-historical and natural-history attractions when planning your trip. This way, you can take the different interests into account without having to focus your stay on just one theme.
