Sankt Lorenz lies between the shore of Mondsee and the rugged Drachenwand. A stay here therefore offers a variety of options: hikes in the mountain landscape, swimming spots by the lake and the history of the branch church of St Lorenz. When planning a trip, you can first decide whether hiking, time by the water or cultural heritage will shape your stay.

Landscape and hiking routes

The Drachenwand is one of the most distinctive mountain peaks in the MondSeeLand. It can be reached via hiking trail 12a or the via ferrata; the via ferrata is one of the recreational facilities of the municipality of Sankt Lorenz. Another hiking destination is the Almkogel: the hike starts at the Drachenwand via ferrata car park and leads to the panoramic mountain. The route is a panoramic hike in the municipality of Sankt Lorenz am Mondsee. The practical details differ when planning your hikes: at the Drachenwand, you can choose between hiking trail 12a and the via ferrata; for the Almkogel, the car park is the starting point for a panoramic hike.

Swimming spots and water sports

Plomberg swimming area lies in an idyllic setting below the Drachenwand and is accessible at all times. The kiosk and facilities are open only in fine weather during summer. Schwarzindien swimming area is also accessible at all times; its kiosk is open only in fine weather during summer. The area has a swimming-area buffet and is suitable for a day of swimming. At both swimming areas, access should be distinguished from seasonal kiosk hours; only at Plomberg are the facilities also subject to fine weather during summer. If you are planning to visit an open kiosk, take the season and weather into account.

The “Weisse Taube” sailing and surfing school is in the Schwarzindien district, right by the lake next to a large swimming area.

Church and local history

The branch church of St Lorenz is first mentioned in a record dating from 1486. Construction of the present-day church began in 1726 and was completed in 1730; the early mention and the present-day building are therefore distinct historical milestones. The church contains three marble altars created by Georg Doppler of Salzburg. Weekly services in honour of Saint Lawrence are held in summer. Check the service schedule before your trip if you are planning to attend one of these services.

The St. Lorenz wayside shrine is also part of the local history. It stands at a bend in the old road between St Lorenz Church and the WagnermĂĽhle mill. A locally passed-down historical explanation is associated with the shrine: according to reports, there were once many accidents at this bend on a gravel road.

The “Places of Faith: Chapel Village of St. Lorenz” route also begins and ends in Sankt Lorenz am Mondsee.
