The Running Loop starts in Weignersdorf and leads through characteristic meadows and forests. It is 6.9 kilometers long and is often completed in about 45 minutes. Check the route before setting out. A short forest path lies at the eastern end of Breitlüsserwald. The two paths therefore have different orientation details: for the Running Loop, the emphasis is on its length and approximate duration; for the forest path, on its location in the forest.

Weignersdorf: a historical landmark

A dated event also offers a glimpse into the history of the town: On April 20, 1663, Regina Hueber, widow of Weignersdorf, sold her residence there, together with its appurtenances, to Jakob Thanninger. The specific date, the people involved, and the sale make this a clearly dated part of local history.

Routes and winter activities in Hellmonsödt

In Hellmonsödt, the Hans Helmon Storybook Trail tells the story of the poor farmer Hans Helmon on nine display boards. At each board, there is a riddle and a task to solve. The trail passes through the leisure park and is suitable for strollers. It is approximately 2.5 kilometers long; the walking time is listed as about 40 minutes.

The Hellmonsödt Planet Trail is a four-kilometer, barrier-free loop created in 2006. Display boards provide information about the planets and the solar system; the trail also has children’s play equipment and a picnic area. Its theme is therefore clearly different from the story and activities on the Storybook Trail.

For winter sports, Hellmonsödt has the Nordic Arena Oberaigen/Hellmonsödt, which opened on September 4, 2026. It offers an easy, flat two-kilometer stadium loop and a 7.7-kilometer cross-country ski trail with varying levels of difficulty. The routes therefore differ in both length and stated difficulty. Their availability depends on seasonal snow conditions.

A winter walking loop follows the Planet Trail for the most part. It is cleared for hikers and walkers in winter; snow clearing depends on local conditions. The loop also passes through Wasserwald Leisure Park. Another named route in Hellmonsödt is the six-kilometer R3 Bird Education Trail Loop.

Culture and visiting hours in Hellmonsödt

At the Pelmberg Open-Air Museum, the Mittermayrhof was first mentioned in a document in 1325. The farmstead features the stone masonry typical of the Mühlviertel region. It also has a thatched roof weighing approximately 35,000 kilograms and an 18-meter-long escape tunnel carved into granite, which can still be walked through.

The open-air museum’s visiting season is from May 1 to October 31. Visits are scheduled on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 2 to 5 p.m., as well as by appointment. Check the current visiting hours in advance.

A small mummy, approximately 400 years old, is in the crypt of the Starhemberg Chapel and can be viewed through a glass cover. A total of twelve marble tombstones dating from 1418 to 1675 are located in the Starhemberg Chapel and on the exterior walls of Hellmonsödt parish church. Visiting hours for the crypt chapel are scheduled daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except during services. Tours of the crypt chapel and crypt last about 50 minutes and require advance booking. Check current hours and access arrangements before your visit.
