Nature along the Danube

Puchenauer Au is a tranquil local recreation area right on the Danube. This natural floodplain forest provides a habitat for many plants and animals. For nature lovers, its appeal lies in this combination: the Au is a riverside recreation area and, at the same time, a natural habitat. This makes it a specific point of reference when exploring Puchenau for its natural side. Hiking, cycling and leisure activities on the golf course meadow offer further possible highlights of a stay.

Hiking between the Stations of the Cross and the TĂĽrmeweg

The Puchenau Stations of the Cross trail starts in Puchenau and follows a clearly marked route through the forest, past fourteen Stations of the Cross, climbing approximately 200 metres in altitude. The trail markings, the stations, the route through the forest and the approximate elevation gain give you several concrete points of reference for working the route into your plans. The starting point can be reached via the Puchenau stop on the MĂĽhlkreisbahn railway or the Puchenau Ost bus stop. There are therefore two named access options: a railway stop and a bus stop. This is useful if you want to plan your hiking destination and access point together.

The Türmeweg is a detour from the Puchenau Stations of the Cross trail and leads to three partially ruined defensive towers. The difference between the two sections of trail is clear: the Stations of the Cross trail is defined by its stations and forest ascent, while the detour leads to the towers. If you are deciding whether the Stations of the Cross trail is enough for your hiking day or whether to include the Türmeweg, these features can help guide you. The brochure “Quo Vadis? – Hiking, Running and Nordic Walking in Puchenau” presents routes for hiking, running and Nordic walking. It brings together tours for three forms of activity, so you can use your preferred way of getting around as a selection criterion.

Cycling along the Danube and to the heating plant

Cycling can also be considered in relation to different local landmarks. The Linz–Puchenau main cycling route provides a continuous cycling connection to the Puchenau heating plant. The Danube Cycle Path R1 runs directly along the riverbank in the section near Puchenau. The two descriptions therefore differ in how they orient you: the main cycling route has a named endpoint, while the R1 is described as running directly beside the river. When choosing between these cycling options, you can decide whether a specific destination or a route along the Danube is more important to you.

Activity park and Maypole Festival

Aktivpark Puchenau, with outdoor fitness equipment, is located on the golf course meadow in the centre of Puchenau. The exercises in the activity park can be done outdoors at any time of day, all year round and free of charge. The same golf course meadow hosts the annual Maypole Festival, featuring a varied entertainment programme for all ages. This means two different leisure options are available in one place: exercising on your own and a recurring festival with an entertainment programme. When planning, you can choose whether you are interested in the activity park as a place to exercise or the Maypole Festival as an event.
