Cultural history and historic sites
The parish community of Gramastetten built Kalvarienberg Church and its Stations of the Cross between 1831 and 1834 on the Galgenbühel hill east of the market town. Inside are a votive painting by Johann Meindl from 1853 and a series of paintings by Hugo Gielge from 1958. The latter partly depicts wartime experiences. The works represent different periods in the church’s interior.
A document dated 16 April 1444 records the construction of a new parish church dedicated to Saint Lawrence. By the time Gramastetten was granted market town status in 1518, construction of the new church had probably been completed. These dates provide insight into the town’s building history, while leaving the probable completion date unconfirmed.
The granite Jahresstiege (Year Staircase) has 365 steps and leads from the GroĂźe Rodl to Pfarrerwiese. It was built in the 19th century to provide work for people in need. The Steubl Mill is another historic landmark: it is a watermill more than 500 years old. Its machinery is largely preserved, with some pieces more than 120 years old.
