Taufkirchen an der Pram combines Gothic architecture, local cultural history and routes with clearly distinct themes. These highlights can help you plan a hotel stay: you can focus on art and crafts, choose a route along the Pram, or consider Taufkirchen as part of a cycling route. This lets you choose your destination based on what you would like to experience during your stay.

Culture and History

The Gothic parish church is a single-nave Gothic building constructed around 1450 by master builder Stefan Krumenauer. The church also houses a valuable Gothic Madonna dating from around 1460. The building and the artwork are two distinct points of interest: the church represents Gothic architecture, while the Madonna is a specific sacred work of art from the same period.

Education and the history of artists are also part of the town’s cultural themes. Taufkirchen an der Pram Middle School is the only school in Austria with its own museum, the Museum in the School. The Bilger-Breustedt House was the home and workplace of the artist couple Margret Bilger and Hans Joachim Breustedt. The two places offer different perspectives: a museum in a school setting in one case, and the lives and work of two artists in the other.

Those interested in everyday life and the history of crafts will find another highlight at the Laufenbach Handicrafts Museum. Covering an area of 3,500 m², the museum explores around 15 crafts and trades that were practised in the village of Laufenbach in the 19th and 20th centuries. Wooden houses around 300 years old, refurnished true to their original form, show how people used to live and work in small workshops. The focus is therefore not only on individual trades, but also on the relationship between living and working at the time.

The Taufkirchen bog oak consists of the remains of the crown of an oak tree that was probably felled by a storm between 260 and 420 AD. This far-reaching time period offers a different historical perspective from the architectural and artistic references to around 1450 and 1460.

Walking and Cycling Routes

Two specific walking routes are easy to compare by length and theme. The 12 km Marterl and Chapel Trail runs from Taufkirchen an der Pram past several local chapels and wayside shrines to the Museum in the School. The 4.3 km Pram Trail starts at the village square and follows the Pram. If you prefer a shorter route, the Pram Trail is clearly shorter than the 12 km route; the longer trail’s specific stops include chapels, wayside shrines and the museum.

By bike, Taufkirchen is part of the Pramtal Cycle Route. The route follows the Pram through Zell an der Pram, Andorf and Taufkirchen an der Pram to the Baroque town of Schärding. It is signposted as R21 and is suitable for families. Unlike the walking trails, this cycle route passes through several named places before reaching Schärding—an alternative route for travellers who would like to include cycling in their plans.

Play and Exercise

Högl-Lorenz Generations Park offers numerous play structures and a fitness area for young and old. It also includes the district’s first pump track. The park thus complements the cultural attractions and routes with a dedicated focus on play and exercise; the fitness area is expressly intended for different age groups.
