Langenstein: Danube Floodplains, Trails and History
Accommodation in Langenstein
Langenstein lies about 15 km east of Linz, in a peaceful setting between the hills of the MĂĽhlviertel and the Danube floodplains. The town has many different sides, including hiking and cycling trails, a biotope, a fishing area and several historic sites. The Danube shapes both the landscape and the fishing area: it is the main waterway of Donau C, while the Gusen is its tributary. Langenstein can be reached via the Donau-BundesstraĂźe. If you are looking for a hotel, you can consider the town in light of these highlights and your own travel interests.
Hiking, Cycling and Waterways
The Spilbergrunde is a 4 km hiking trail in Langenstein. The R 28 Gusentalradweg is also a cycling trail in Langenstein. For travel planning, you can distinguish between the two based on the activity: the Spilbergrunde is for hiking, while the R 28 is for cycling. This can help you decide which kind of activity you would like to focus on during your stay.
The Donau C fishing area is located within the municipality. The Danube is its main waterway, while the Gusen is a tributary. If waterways and fishing are important to your choice, this distinction provides a specific point of reference: both rivers are part of the area, but they have different roles there.
Nature in the Floodplain Landscape
In 1991, a biotope was created in the village of Langenstein, set within a floodplain landscape, to preserve the habitat of the animals living there. Information boards at the biotope show the animals and native plants. This combines the protection of a specific habitat with information about its animal and plant life. The biotope adds a deliberately created natural area and its own features to the landscape of the Danube floodplains.
Cultural History and the Gusen Memorial
The “Berglitzl” on Seyerberg in the municipality of Langenstein is an archaeological excavation and sacrificial site dating back to the Palaeolithic period. The “Frankenberger-Kircherl” in the village of Frankenberg is a memorial to the Peasants’ War and became part of the history of the municipality of Langenstein in that capacity. The two sites represent different historical points of reference: the Berglitzl is a site of great archaeological antiquity, while the Kircherl commemorates the Peasants’ War.
The Gusen Concentration Camp Memorial was inaugurated on 8 May 1965. In 2004, a visitor centre with a permanent historical exhibition opened there. Both the history of the memorial and the exhibition in the visitor centre are cultural points of interest in Langenstein.
