Grieskirchen brings together several distinct themes for planning a trip: historic buildings, public art, fountains and routes to Parz and Tollet castles. The buildings date from 1468 to 1708; alongside them are a large-scale work of art and two circular routes with clearly stated distances. This lets you focus your stay more on architecture, public art or a specific route.

Historic buildings and their construction phases

Parz Castle was built in 1514 using materials salvaged from the demolition of the old Tegernbach Castle. The parish church is the oldest building in the town and is dedicated to Saint Martin. Its first historically documented renovation took place in 1701/1702, when the church was given a Baroque makeover. The church’s age within the town and its much later transformation therefore stand as two distinct historical points of reference.

Built in 1468, St. Anne’s Chapel is a late Gothic structure. Both its ribbed vault and its portal date from the same stylistic period. A ribbed vault is structured by projecting ribs; together with the portal, the description identifies two specific architectural features of the chapel.

Other buildings and monuments can also be distinguished by their form and dates. The Trinity Column was erected as a votive column in 1708. It is about seven metres high and has a triangular footprint. The Karbrunnen fountain dates from 1610. The tomb monument of Sigmund von Polheim and his wife Potentiana is a rare work of art history from the 16th century.

Public art

The Stadtnetz, a 1,600 m² work of art by artist Maria Treml, has a different scale from the historic buildings. It winds from house to house at a height of 13 to 25 metres. In Grieskirchen, the Stadtnetz has become a symbol of connection and community. Its size, course and meaning each offer a distinct perspective: it is public art and, at the same time, a locally rooted symbol.

The Kepler Clock adds a distinctive format to the art and culture themes. Installed at the Grieskirchen school campus, it is a 240 m² vertical, flat sundial. It is intended to be open to visitors year-round; check the current conditions before your visit.

Routes with different distances

For a comparison of specific route distances, consider the Parz Castle Route and the Tollet Castle Route. The Parz Castle Route covers 4.4 km from the town centre to Parz Castle and back; it starts at the church square by the parish church. The Tollet Castle Route covers 7 km from the town centre to Tollet Castle and back. Each distance therefore covers the full round trip: at 4.4 km, the Parz Castle Route is shorter than the 7 km route to Tollet Castle. Seasonal conditions may vary on both routes; check them before planning.

The route along the avenue of fruit trees to St. Georgen offers a different perspective on the landscape. It passes through the rolling countryside of the Trattnachtal valley and offers views of Tollet Castle over long stretches. Tollet Castle adds its own architectural history to these route themes: near Grieskirchen, it was rebuilt in the Renaissance style in 1607.

Fountains, leisure pool and getting around

The Klafterbrunnen is a small spring at the foot of a slope, not far from the swimming pool in Grieskirchen. Many people collect water there, especially for making coffee. The family-friendly Grieskirchen leisure pool has a water surface area of more than 760 m². As seasonal opening arrangements may change, check the current conditions before your visit.

For travel planning, Grieskirchen-Gallspach railway station is about one kilometre from Grieskirchen. This approximate distance adds to the route information without replacing route lengths or local directions.
