Discover Munderfing: Forest, Wind Farm and Churches
Accommodation in Munderfing
Munderfing lies on the edge of the KobernauĂźerwald forest. Attractions for a stay range from forest paths and a trail about climate and energy to churches, chapels and religious memorials. If you are looking for a hotel in Munderfing, the following distinctions can help you choose the focus of your trip.
Forest and trails
There are numerous well-marked hiking and cycling trails in the Kobernaußerwald around Munderfing. The Kobernaußerwald is considered Europe’s largest contiguous forest. This means that, within the same natural area, you can choose between general hiking and cycling trails and a more specifically themed educational trail.
Climate & Energy Trail
The Climate & Energy Trail is an educational trail in the KobernauĂźerwald that runs from Parz to the Munderfing Wind Farm. It explains the use of renewable energy and the fundamentals of climate and climate change. The route thus combines a specific course with a clearly defined learning focus. For travelers interested in energy issues, this offers a different focus from the general hiking and cycling network.
At the Munderfing Wind Farm, a viewpoint offers a direct view of the wind turbines. The trail therefore offers two distinct perspectives: learning about energy and climate issues along the route, and seeing the facilities up close at the destination.
Churches and sacred art
The Roman Catholic parish church in Munderfing has a 44-meter-high Baroque onion dome tower. An onion dome is a tower roof with a bulbous, curved shape; the stated height gives the structure a clear measure. The church’s side altar and statues are by Meinrad Guggenbichler. This brings together a distinctive architectural feature and specifically attributed sculpture.
The Kerscher Chapel also has striking details: its Baroque vault is decorated with acanthus stucco and frescoes depicting the Blood of Christ. The ornate altar was probably created in 1714 by the sculptor Meinrad Guggenbichler, who came from Mondsee. While the parish church’s side altar and statues are attributed to him, the 1714 date for the Kerscher Chapel altar’s creation is probable, not certain.
Valentinhaft branch church was first mentioned in a document in 1179. The year marks its first documentary mention. Another historical landmark is the plague cross at the foot of Haidberg on Jeginger Straße: it commemorates the end of the plague of 1712 to 1714. Together, these places reflect different connections to the past—a very early written record and a monument to a specific event.
Another route connection
The 14.1-kilometer section of the VIA NOVA trail connects Munderfing with Maria Schmolln. Unlike the themed trail, whose description highlights learning about renewable energy and climate, VIA NOVA’s specific points of reference are its connection to another named place and the length of the section. This lets you distinguish between a themed route in the Kobernaußerwald and a trail section with a stated distance.
