Haigermoos combines an extraordinary history of church architecture with trails through woodland and moorland. The parish church, nature trail and Hubertus Chapel each offer something different: you can focus your stay on culture, hiking or the landscape. Lake Höllerersee is also a useful local landmark; its northern part lies within the municipality.

Church history in Haigermoos

The parish church in Haigermoos is Austria’s only double church of this architectural design. It was completed in 1466 and is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. It was first mentioned in a document as early as around 1070. These two dates refer to different historical milestones: around 1070 is the first documented mention, while 1466 is the year of completion. Anyone interested in church architecture and local history will find a distinctive cultural highlight here, including its unique design, dedication and long historical background.

Hubertus Chapel and hiking

Another architectural highlight is the Hubertus Chapel, an open chapel of modern design in Haigermoos. It offers a view of the parish church as well as a vantage point overlooking the surrounding landscape. The chapel also serves as a starting point for hikes in the region. Architecture, a view of the parish church and the opportunity to include hikes in your travel plans all come together in one place.

Haigermoos lies on the VIA NOVA section from Mining to Berndorf. For a local hike, the Haigermoos Nature Trail is also a useful guide: it is approximately 5.5 kilometres long and passes through woodland and moorland in and around Haigermoos. The trail starts at the municipal centre in the heart of the village, where parking is available. At the edge of the village, the route turns left onto a farm track, also known as the Via Nova pilgrimage route. The Mining–Berndorf stage and this specific route provide different points of reference for planning.

Lake district, moorland and art

Haigermoos lies amid the Upper Innviertel lake district, in a scenic hilly landscape between Lake Höllerersee and Lake Holzöstersee. Lake Höllerersee is a typical moor lake; its northern part lies within the municipality of Haigermoos. There are plenty of opportunities for hiking and cycling, particularly in the idyllic moorland around the hamlet of Hehermoos. Alongside the nature trail, you can enjoy other activities inspired by the landscape without having to commit to just one route.

At the edge of Brackwald forest, you can see artworks and wooden sculptures created by former master farmer Georg Felber of the Anthalergut farm. This connection to art adds a specific local story to the nature-related attractions. The Haigermoos Tourism Association’s bathing area is also located on Lake Höllerersee. If you plan to visit, check its current availability in advance.

These local highlights give your travel plans a tangible focus.
