Wiesing between the Rofan Mountains, the Church Trail and the Zillertal Cycle Path
Accommodation in Wiesing
Wiesing as a starting point for planning your trip
Wiesing is located in the Inn Valley at the foot of the Rofan Mountains, 568 metres above sea level. If you are looking for a hotel in Wiesing, it helps to decide first what you would like to focus on during your stay: the Church and Chapel Trail, cycling, hiking and winter activities appeal to different interests. The routes differ in their course and destination—from a loop that returns to its starting point to a route between two places.
Hiking and nature at Astenau Alpe
Astenau Alpe is a popular, easy hiking destination in the Rofan area. Rare, protected alpine flowers grow in its lush mountain meadows, including stemless globe flower and gentian. Chamois, roe deer and red deer also live there. The alpine pasture therefore combines an easy hiking opportunity with a landscape where special plants and native wildlife are part of the natural surroundings.
Route variant 4 of the Wiesing Church and Chapel Trail offers another way to explore the area. It starts at Wiesing Parish Church, passes the Felderer Chapel and ends at Stanglegg Trinity Chapel. This gives the route a clearly defined starting point and two chapels along the way. The trail was established at the initiative of the Wiesing local committee and the Achensee Tourism Association. The guide can be collected from the Wiesing information office or requested from the Achensee Tourism Association; check its availability before your trip.
Church history and art in Wiesing
Around the year 1000, Wiesing had a small church dedicated to Saint Vitus. The new church was built over four years starting in 1777 and was solemnly consecrated on 17 July 1781 by Prince-Bishop Josef Count von Spaur of Brixen. The Gothic tower with its tall pointed spire was incorporated into the present-day church.
A specific art-historical detail can also be found at the high altar: the Baroque high altar in the parish church contains a painting of a saint by Franz Anton Zeiller, dating from 1779. Together with the construction dates and the incorporated Gothic tower, the church offers several specific points of interest for visitors interested in Wiesing’s history and religious art.
Cycling and the train connection
The family-friendly Zillertal Cycle Path runs from Wiesing to Mayrhofen and is 36.4 kilometres long in total. The ride can be combined with the Zillertal Railway, which operates between Jenbach and Mayrhofen. The railway carries rental bikes from ZVB AG free of charge, provided there is space on the train. If you are planning this combination, check the conditions of carriage before travelling.
E-bike riders have another specific point of contact in Wiesing: a rental station at Camping Inntal is available even to guests who are not staying at specialist e-bike accommodation. External guests can rent e-bikes directly on site or book them through the Achensee Tourism Association’s Achensee Erlebnis Shop. This allows you to plan the cycle route and the question of e-bike rental separately, without equating the route’s distance with a travel time.
Winter routes: toboggan run or cross-country skiing loop
The Breitlahn toboggan run extends for around three kilometres downhill from Eben to Wiesing and is generally well suited to families. To return to the starting point, you can take the public bus from the Wiesing Abzweigung Stanglegg stop. As winter conditions and services can vary, check the latest information about the toboggan run and bus connection before setting out.
The W1 Buchbergl cross-country ski trail offers a different kind of winter loop: it is easy, suitable for beginners and heads towards Jenbach as far as just before the HTL school, then returns to its starting point. The difference in their routes can help you choose between the two options: the toboggan run descends from Eben to Wiesing, while the cross-country trail loops back to its starting point. Snow and trail conditions can vary.
