The circular trail to the Gritzer Lakes is a similar length at 9.6 kilometers, but has 555 meters of elevation gain, reaches an altitude of 2,505 meters, and is also rated moderate. The circular trail to the Gritzer Lakes starts and ends at the SpeikbodenhĂĽtte. You can also join the trail from the Oberholz parking lot. The hiking season runs from May to October; seasonal conditions can vary. Check conditions before your trip.
The “Leben am Steilhang” panoramic trail is a different route. It runs between the hamlets of Bruggen and Gsaritzen, past the Holzer Mill, and on to Gassen and the village center of Sankt Veit in Defereggen. The route description therefore traces a path through several districts to the center, while the circular trail to the Gritzer Lakes starts and ends at the Speikbodenhütte.
Zotten Waterfall is also in a district of Sankt Veit in Defereggen. From the “Maria Heimsuchung” chapel, a short hike takes you to the waterfall’s spray. For a longer, cross-border route, the 2-Täler-Trail leads from the Sankt Veit in Defereggen area into the South Tyrolean Antholz Valley. It can be hiked in six daily stages, all the way to neighboring Italy.

In Sankt Veit, you can try an archery course; there is also a 9-hole golf course. Toboggan runs are listed for the Oberholz and Leppetal areas in winter. The Leppetal toboggan run also has lighting for evening rides.
Chapels, church tower, and local history
The bell tower of the parish church of Saint Vitus rises prominently in the village center. The chapels in Bruggen and Moos have different histories: the Chapel of St. Florian in Bruggen was rebuilt in 1973 after the previous chapel was destroyed by flooding in 1965. The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows in Moos was founded in 1813 and rebuilt in 1867.
Sankt Veit in Defereggen is also linked to the life of Sebastian Rieger. The priest and writer, known by the name Reimmichl, was born here in 1867. Along with the chapels’ histories and the distinctive church tower, this local history offers another perspective alongside the trails and activities.
