When planning a stay in Heinfels, culture and specific mountain destinations go hand in hand. The castle gives your visit a historical focus; the via ferrata and routes to the lake or alpine pasture each have designated variants, elevation details and views.

Heinfels Castle and Loacker Genusswelt

Heinfels Castle was restored and opened to the public from 2016 to 2020. Its restoration and opening to the public form a clearly defined part of its recent history. If you plan to include a visit to the castle as a fixed part of your stay, check the current visitor information in advance.

Loacker Genusswelt offers a different focus. It is located amid the mountains of East Tyrol, surrounded by fields, farms, forests and Heinfels Castle. The interactive exhibition explores Loacker specialities. At the hands-on confectionery workshop, visitors can make and personalise their own wafer creations. This makes the visit a combination of looking and creating. If you plan to make a wafer creation, check the booking details in advance, as they may change.

Via ferrata with two routes

At the Heinfels Castle via ferrata, it is important to distinguish between the two routes: one family-friendly route is graded B; another is intended for experienced mountaineers and is graded E. This gives you a choice of different, explicitly stated difficulty levels. If the via ferrata is a reason for planning your trip, compare these routes before making your decision.

Tessenberg Lake and Tessenberg Alpine Pasture

The named mountain destinations also have different points of reference. The bike-and-hike route to Tessenberg Lake starts in Heinfels-Tessenberg at 1,320 metres and ends at the lake at 2,124 metres. For Tessenberg Alpine Pasture, the views are the highlight of the climb: they extend to the Carnic Main Ridge and the Lienz and Sexten Dolomites. The two plans therefore differ in specific ways: for the lake, the starting and finishing elevations are key; for the alpine pasture, it is the panorama. Mountain conditions vary by season; check conditions for your planned date.

Getting to the excursion destinations

The route to Tessenberg Lake from Heinfels can be reached by bus via the “Panzendorf Gemeindeamt Heinfels” stop; parking is available at Heinfels municipal office. As access details may change seasonally, check the bus connection and parking availability before setting out.

For train travel, Heinfels station is another point of reference: it is 0.5 kilometres from Heinfels Castle. Regional trains connect it from the direction of Innichen (San Candido) and from the direction of Lienz in East Tyrol. Check the timetable and station arrangements before departure. This lets you tailor your journey to Heinfels and your choice of excursion destinations to different priorities.
