Virgen offers several starting points for planning a trip: a rural cultural landscape that has evolved over centuries, historic buildings and seasonal activities. The following topics show what makes this destination distinctive in these areas.

Landscape and Local History

The fields around Virgen form a hedgerow landscape that has developed over centuries through local farming. Its origins link the landscape today with the village’s agricultural history. Alongside historic buildings and outdoor activities, this human-shaped environment is one of Virgen’s defining features.

An important historic building is Rabenstein Castle, which was probably built in the 12th century. It was the seat of a Pfleger, or administrator and judge, of the Virgen court. Its jurisdiction also included Prägraten and St. Jakob in Defereggen. The castle’s history therefore points not only to the building itself, but also to the former judicial authority in this area.

Churches and Traditions

Today’s Virgen parish church is a Gothic church consecrated in 1516. The pilgrimage church of Maria Schnee in Obermauern has a different building history: an originally Romanesque church was extended and remodeled into a late Gothic building. This work was completed in 1454. The church’s frescoes depicting scenes from the Passion of Jesus were painted by Simon von Taisten at the end of the 15th century. Together, the two churches reflect different historical and artistic influences.

The Virgental sacrificial ram tradition is also part of local history. It is based on a vow made in 1635. During the sacrificial ram procession, the procession of prayer travels from Virgen parish church to the pilgrimage church of Maria Schnee in Obermauern. Dates may vary from year to year; if you would like to include the procession in your travel plans, check the current event dates.

Trails and Special Places

The Rabenstein ruins lie directly on the Virgentaler Sonnseitenweg. This route takes leisurely hikers from Matrei in Osttirol to Prägraten am Großvenediger in two to four stages. The ruins thus bring together a historic site and a trail with these stated stage destinations.

A water playground on the Way of the Senses features a Kneipp pool, water channels, gutters and sluices. The stone-carving workshop in a former sawmill on the banks of the Isel offers another glimpse of local craftsmanship. You can often watch the artists at work there; whether they are working at any given time may vary.

Another specific trail connection leads to the Iselschlucht suspension bridge: it can be reached from the Obermauern bus stop via trail no. 46 in about 30 minutes.

Winter Activities

The Fellachlift is located within the village and is a small ski area particularly suited to beginners and families. Its offering is seasonal and focused on winter. For cross-country skiing, Virgen’s trail network is part of the Dolomiti-Nordic-Ski network. Winter planning therefore centers on two different options: a local ski area and the trail network’s inclusion in a named network.

Whether the cultural landscape, historic sites, trails or winter activities are the deciding factor for you depends on your travel interests. These different themes offer different ways to explore Virgen as a destination and provide a basis for finding suitable hotels in Virgen.
