Several clearly distinct themes are relevant when choosing a stay in Niedermauern: chapels and a legend offer points of cultural and historical interest; the cycle path and pilgrimage route describe different routes; and a natural toboggan run is designated at the Würfelehütte. You can plan your visit around whichever of these themes matters most to you. The chapels focus on building history and tradition, while the routes are defined by their course or stage destination.

Chapels and traditions

The Chapel of St Apollonia in Niedermauern was built in 1783. Most of the paintings and murals in its current interior date from 1918 and were created by Josef Weiskopf the Younger. For a cultural and historical perspective, it is worth distinguishing between the building’s history and its interior: the two dates refer to different phases of the chapel’s history. Most of the paintings and murals were created more than a century after the chapel was built.

The local Chapel of St John Nepomuk in Niedermauern-Gries was completely rebuilt in 1818. This is a third, distinct point of reference in time, alongside the year the Chapel of St Apollonia was built and the year its interior was created: 1818 marks the complete reconstruction of the chapel in Niedermauern-Gries. This comparison distinguishes between construction, rebuilding and later interior decoration.

The Pest-Kötterle in Niedermauern adds a legend to the cultural and historical highlights. It contains a copied depiction of a ram fighting the Grim Reaper, defeating him and thereby driving death from the valley. Unlike the chapels, with their building dates, the focus here is the traditional story depicted in the image.

Cycle path and pilgrimage route

On the Virgental Cycle Path No. 132, turn towards Niedermauern in the municipality of Virgen, after which the cycle route runs directly alongside the Isel. The description therefore gives a sequence: first the turn in Virgen, then the route along the river.

The alpine pilgrimage route “Hoch und Heilig” crosses the Isel at Gries and then continues to Obermauern and the pilgrimage church of Maria Schnee, the destination of this stage. Check seasonal trail conditions before setting out. The difference between the two routes is clear: the cycle route runs alongside the Isel, while the pilgrimage route crosses it and leads to the pilgrimage church as its stage destination.

Toboggan run and local orientation

The toboggan run at the Würfelehütte bears the Tyrol regional quality seal for natural toboggan runs. The Würfelehütte is an alpine farm and snack station. These are two different points of reference: the quality seal applies to the toboggan run, while the two descriptions refer to the hut.

Habererhof campsite is located in the Niedermauern district of Virgen, about a 5- to 10-minute walk from the Iseltrail. The walking time is approximate and may be affected by conditions and route changes.
