Innervillgraten: Alpine Pastures, Churches and Trails
Accommodation in Innervillgraten
Innervillgraten offers a range of attractions for a stay: listed alpine huts, a pilgrimage church, traditional rural crafts, as well as trails and winter activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Innervillgraten, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your trip: are architecture and history your priority, would you like to go hiking, or are you interested in snow activities?
Alpine Hamlet, Pilgrimage Church and Architectural Heritage
Oberstalleralm combines a historic settlement layout with a hiking destination: a short hike there starts at Unterstalleralm in the upper Villgratental valley. The listed alpine hamlet comprises 18 historic alpine huts and a chapel. The huts were first mentioned in 1675. A visit therefore lets you combine the history of the hamlet with a walk through the valley.
The pilgrimage church of Maria Schnee, dating from 1660, stands in Kalkstein. Its interior also features specific architectural details: a simple star-ribbed vault and a pointed chancel arch define the building. The church and Oberstalleralm offer different points of interest: one draws attention to the interior design of a religious building, while the other is a listed ensemble of huts and a chapel.
Traditional Rural Crafts at the Open-Air Museum
The Alpine Life Open-Air Museum is located at the entrance to the Arntal valley in Innervillgraten. It showcases restored examples of traditional rural working life and architecture. These include a fulling mill for loden cloth, a mill, a farmhouse, an alpine hut and an entrance house. The collection ranges from work equipment to buildings, and explores different aspects of everyday rural life.
The fulling mill also illustrates how the material is made: woven wool is pounded and fulled in hot water until it becomes dense loden cloth. The fulling mill has been in operation for more than 200 years. Other insights can be found at the historic Lüfter mill, a flour mill with a barley roller, and at the “Neuhauser” farmhouse, an authentic farmhouse dating from between 1700 and 1740. Visitors particularly interested in working methods will find different details here than at the alpine huts or the pilgrimage church.
Hiking Trails and Views
For a shorter hike, the viewing platform at the Klapfbach waterfall can be included in a circular route. From the Unterstalleralm snack station, it takes about ten minutes to walk to the platform. The approximate walking time is based on this starting point; the platform is also part of a circular hike. Another natural attraction is the Sinkersee nature monument, which can be circled along a fenced path.
For a longer tour, the “Herzass” long-distance hiking trail comprises five stages covering a total of 70 kilometres. The route runs along 50 summits around the mountaineering villages of Außervillgraten and Innervillgraten. This makes it quite different from the short walk to the viewing platform: here, the overall experience is shaped by several stages and the total distance. Which tour suits your stay therefore also depends on whether you have a short loop or a long-distance hiking trail in mind.
Tobogganing and Skiing in Winter
The toboggan runs also differ according to the information available. The unlit Sandbergweg starts near the centre of Innervillgraten. The Alte Kalksteinerweg is in Kalkstein, is two kilometres long and has an average gradient of four to eight per cent.
Children and beginner skiers can ski at the Stauderlift. This adds an option for learning to ski to the tobogganing opportunities. Hiking, tobogganing and skiing are therefore different options alongside the historic attractions. When looking for a hotel in Innervillgraten, it may be helpful to first consider which of these activities or sights you would most like to make a focus of your stay.
