Untertilliach is ideal for a trip that combines local character with outdoor activities. The municipality consists of several inhabited hamlets surrounded by natural landscapes and mountain scenery. In the village centre, you can admire religious buildings and rustic farmhouses as you stroll. There are also summer hikes, mountain bike tours and a cross-country ski trail in the winter months. When planning your visit, it helps to decide what you would like to focus on: taking in the village on a walk, exploring its religious architecture or making a seasonal activity the centrepiece of your stay?

Village Character and History

A chapel on Kirchberg was first mentioned in a document in 1290. The church on Kirchberg was built of stone in 1450 and consecrated to Saints Jenewein, Ingenuin and Albuin in 1479. The present-day parish church of St. Florian was built between 1777 and 1780. These historic milestones range from an early mention to a stone church and its consecration, and finally to the construction period of the present-day parish church. The dates offer a chronological perspective on the history of religious architecture; the farmhouses in the village centre offer another way to appreciate the local character. You can combine both interests on a walk through the village centre.

Discover Honey and Beekeeping

The Höfe Trail experience “To the Bees” offers a specific focus. You can watch beekeeper Josef Schmidhofer at work, help him while wearing special protective clothing, and taste his meadow honey, forest honey or alpine rose honey. The experience combines observing, helping and tasting. The three types of honey mentioned offer different flavours to enjoy. If you are interested in bees and honey, this offers a different way to experience your stay than going for a stroll or a hike.

Hiking Trails and Stages

The hiking options differ in their routes. The Grenzland hiking trail connects Kartitsch, Obertilliach and Untertilliach. It follows easy forest roads and does not use roads open to traffic. The Untertilliach Kirche bus stop is a point of arrival for this trail. Check the current timetable if you are planning your journey around it. As trail conditions can change, it is also worth checking the latest conditions before setting out. The Gailtaler Höhenweg runs close to Untertilliach. You can therefore choose between the Grenzland hiking trail, which explicitly connects the named villages, and the nearby high-altitude trail.

The valley-side day stages of the Höfe Trail also provide a useful guide for planning a hike: they are around 10 km long on average and run between the stage villages of Kartitsch, Obertilliach, Untertilliach, Maria Luggau, St. Lorenzen and Liesing in the Lesachtal valley. The stage villages and average distance offer two different ways to plan: the list of villages shows the route across several stops, while the approximately 10 km describes the average length of the valley-side day stages. This average is a rough guide, not an exact distance for every individual stage.

Summer and Winter in Untertilliach

Seasonal activities offer different ways to enjoy the area. In summer, you can hike on the many trails in Untertilliach and go on mountain bike tours. In the winter months, the Grenzland cross-country ski trail runs through the valley to Kartitsch, offering an opportunity to go cross-country skiing. Snow conditions vary, so check them before planning your trip. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, it is best to choose your travel dates based on the activities you want to enjoy: summer hiking and mountain biking, or the winter option of cross-country skiing.
