Gschnitz offers a variety of ways to enjoy the outdoors, from the valley trail to the Laponesalm and mountain tours to cross-country skiing and winter hiking. When looking for a hotel in Gschnitz, you can start by considering which of these activities you want to shape your trip. The places and activities below offer some concrete ideas.

Hiking and Via Ferrata

The trip to the Laponesalm is an easy family hike. The route follows the Gschnitzbach stream to the end of the valley. If you are looking for a hike with a clearly defined destination, this offers a different kind of outing from the high-alpine options around the mountain huts. A hut taxi to the Laponesalm is available by advance booking. Booking and operating details may change; check them in advance if you plan to use the taxi.

An alternative ascent to the pilgrimage chapel of St. Magdalena is also possible via a via ferrata rated B/C (moderate to difficult). Check the conditions and safety requirements of the via ferrata before using it. The Alpine Safety Area is a training and practice ground for mountain hikers and via ferrata climbers. As its use and access may change, check the current rules before visiting.

Mountain Huts and Longer Tours

The Padasterjochhaus can be reached from Gschnitz and is Austria’s oldest Naturfreundehaus (Friends of Nature hut). The Innsbrucker Hütte is located at the foot of the 3,277-metre-high Habicht. Both huts are useful points of reference for planning tours; however, the facts stated here do not indicate a shared route or connection between them.

For a multi-day outing, the Gschnitztal Hut Tour is on a different scale: it covers a total of 62 kilometres in six stages along black-marked mountain trails around the mountaineering village of Gschnitztal. The number of stages and total distance describe the scope of the tour, while the trail markings indicate the character of the routes. So don’t compare this tour with the walk to the Laponesalm; compare it with your own plans for a longer mountain hike.

Cross-Country Skiing and Winter Hiking

The approximately 18-kilometre Gschnitz cross-country ski trail is groomed for both classic and skating styles. Before travelling, check whether the trail is groomed and available, as grooming and trail access are seasonal. A premium winter hiking trail runs alongside it.

This lets you plan your winter stay around your chosen activity: the trail offers two cross-country skiing styles, while the parallel path provides a different way to get active as a winter hiking route. The stated trail length is approximate; it does not indicate how long a tour takes. For your plans, both current trail conditions and your own schedule for the day are therefore important.

Getting There and Planning Your Visit

Ă–BB Postbus route 4146 connects Steinach am Brenner, Trins and Gschnitz. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable before your trip, as journey times may change. The route names the three places but does not specify a particular journey duration. If you plan to take the hut taxi to the Laponesalm, advance booking is also required; check the operating details in good time.

Gschnitz as a Mountaineering Village

Together with Trins, Gschnitz has been part of the Alpine Association’s mountaineering villages since May 2019, under the name “Gschnitztal”. This designation brings the two places together as part of the mountaineering village. The valley offers a range of options, including the short hike to the Laponesalm, via ferrata and mountain hut activities, as well as winter trails and the cross-country ski trail. When planning your trip, it is worth considering your chosen activity and its specific conditions separately.

Also check the current visitor status of the Gschnitz Mill Village: it was almost completely destroyed by a mudslide during a severe storm in early July 2025 and cannot currently be visited. If you are considering a visit, check whether access has changed before setting out.
