Discover Salla: Forest Glass Museum, history and hikes
Accommodation in Salla
In Salla, historical themes and extensive hikes can be considered as distinct focuses of a stay. The Forest Glass Museum is dedicated to the history of the mountain village; the parish church and castle provide further historical points of interest. Those interested in local history can combine these themes with hikes as separate activities.
Salla Forest Glass Museum
The Salla Forest Glass Museum is housed in a manor house commissioned by Peter Tunner Sr. in 1811. Across three exhibition rooms, the Waldglas Salla Museum presents the history of the mountain village from the Late Middle Ages to the 19th century. Two time periods therefore sit side by side: the house dates back to 1811, while the exhibition covers a much longer period of Salla’s local history. This provides an introduction to the development of the mountain village without limiting the exhibition to the period when the building was constructed. Visits are possible only by prior telephone appointment and with a guided tour. Please arrange your visit by phone and allow for the guided tour when planning.
Church, castle and historic trails
The parish church of Saints Peter and Paul was first mentioned in a document in 1245. At Klingenstein Castle, its purpose and a construction date that should be treated with caution are the main points: it was built to secure the crossing over Gaberl, known as the Reisstraße. Its masonry suggests that the castle may have been built around 1400. The dates mark different historical points of reference: 1245 is the church’s first documented mention, while around 1400 refers to a possible construction date for the castle. This distinction helps put the information in context; the dates do not refer to the same event.
The Historic Hiking Trail through Salla offers insights into the eventful history of the mountain village of Salla, at the foot of the Stubalm, through eight selected sites. These sites offer several points of connection to the historical theme rather than narrowing it down to a single date or building. Together with the museum, they provide different perspectives on local history: through the exhibits in three rooms and through the selected sites along the hiking trail.
Hikes and regional cuisine
Salla is a starting point for extensive hikes to Gaberl or Lankowitz. These activities have a different focus from the museum and local history: here, longer hikes to named destinations take centre stage, while the latter focus on the mountain village’s history. When planning, you can decide whether to set aside time for local history or include one of the extensive hikes as a separate activity.
Regional cuisine is also part of what Salla has to offer. Gasthof Zach-Rauch serves seasonal ingredients and hearty, traditional dishes. If you plan to eat there for particular dishes, ask about the current menu in advance, as the details may change.
