Discover Voitsberg
Accommodation in Voitsberg
Voitsberg offers a variety of ways to shape your stay: historic townhouses in the town centre, the history of Obervoitsberg Castle, art throughout the town and paths through parks. The former mining site in Zangtal and the Grafenteich recreation centre also have their own distinctive character. Which of these themes you choose to explore can give your stay a personal direction.
Town centre, castle and history
Voitsberg’s historic town centre is characterised by historic townhouses. Another landmark is the Arik Brauer Town Hall: in 2002, Arik Brauer decorated its façade with pictorially depicted sayings. Around 120 square metres of hand-painted mosaic tiles were installed on the exterior walls, depicting proverbs. The design combines art with a motif that reveals itself as you walk around the town.
The history of the castle dates back to 1164. At that time, a castle was built on land belonging to St. Lambrecht Abbey, commissioned by Ottokar IV, ruler of Styria. Its name was first mentioned in a document in 1183. From the 13th century onwards, Voitsberg’s town fortifications and Obervoitsberg Castle formed a single defensive system; Greißenegg Castle strengthened this complex. These historical connections give a visit to the castle ruins a broader context than viewing the building on its own.
A walkable path leads from the foot of Schlossberg, over the hill, to the ruins of Obervoitsberg Castle. Parts of the path pass the old castle wall and offer views of Voitsberg and the surrounding area. If you plan to take this route, bear in mind that path conditions can change. The castle ruin’s plateaus also feature an open-air stage for cultural activities. The traditional Burghofspiele theatre festival in Voitsberg is held there; check the programme for specific dates.
Art and mining history in Zangtal
The Zangtal Energy Adventure Park lies north of the ruins of Voitsberg Castle on a former mining site that is gradually being transformed into a landscape park. Relics bring the history of mining to life there, including the old Leopold bucket-wheel excavator. Visitors can explore the site’s industrial past alongside its current park landscape.
Zangtal also features a sculpture park presented as an art trail, and a planting area with 120 different species across 300 square metres. Art, mining relics and plant life offer different points of focus within the park. Those interested in the site’s development will find evidence here of both its former use and its ongoing transformation into a landscape park.
Another cultural stop is the Franz Weiß Museum. Across two floors, it displays numerous woodcuts, reverse glass paintings, early works and unique glass pieces by Franz Weiß. Guided tours of the museum are available to groups by request only. If you are planning a guided group visit, make your enquiry in advance.
Paths and getting around Voitsberg
At the Grafenteich recreation centre, paths run through the park and around Grafenteich. The park is also the starting point for many hiking trails. The leisure area includes a fitness trail and several popular running routes. There are different ways to enjoy outdoor exercise, so you are not limited to just one type of activity.
Voitsberg is accessible by public transport on S-Bahn line S7 to Voitsberg station. RegioBus line 720 runs to Voitsberg Hauptplatz. The town’s sightseeing stops are easily reached on foot from the station. Timetables can change, so check connections again before you travel.
If you are looking for a hotel in Voitsberg, your travel interests can help guide your choice: local history and Rathaus art, the path to the castle ruins, mining history in Zangtal or the paths around Grafenteich. This makes it easy to tailor your stay to your own interests. The different places and activities offer several themes to explore without prescribing a fixed order for your visit.
