Sankt Peter Am Kammersberg: Hiking and Culture
Accommodation in Sankt Peter Am Kammersberg
Sankt Peter Am Kammersberg is a destination for travelers who want to include hiking, nature, and cultural history in their vacation plans. When looking for a hotel, it helps to decide what you want to focus on first: summit and pilgrimage trails, a themed trail that is especially suitable for families, or churches and historic buildings. Consider whether you want to spend more time hiking or exploring cultural history during your stay.
Hiking and Cycling Around the Greim
The Greim is a 2,474-meter-high mountain in the southern Wölzer Tauern. In summer, it is possible to hike to the summit; in winter, winter sports are practiced on the Greim. The season determines the focus of activities here: summer hikes and winter sports are part of different travel plans. If you would like to plan a hike with a specific duration in mind, the Hemma Pilgrimage Route passes through St. Peter am Kammersberg and then continues to Stolzalpe. Allow just under three hours for the hike from Winklern to St. Peter am Kammersberg.
The Katschtal Cycle Path offers another way to explore the region by bike. It connects the valley towns of St. Peter am Kammersberg and Schöder and also provides access to mountain biking trails at the foot of the Greim. When planning, you can choose between a hiking route with a stated duration and a cycling connection with access to mountain biking trails.
Themed Trails for Nature and Alpine Farming
Near Oberwölz, the Eselsberger Alpine Experience Trail lies at the foot of the Greim. The trail is particularly suitable for families with children. At seven stations, it shares information about alpine farming, past and present, as well as local flora and fauna. There are traditionally operated huts with playgrounds in the surrounding area.
The “Tierisch Wild” adventure trail has a different focus: it features life-size images of native wild animals and provides information about them. When choosing a themed trail, you can decide whether you would rather learn about alpine farming and nature or see life-size depictions of wild animals.
Churches, Frescoes, and Architectural History
The parish church of St. Peter am Kammersberg was built in 1072 and features Romanesque and Gothic elements. Frescoes in the parish church’s charnel house depict the Journey of the Three Kings and the Last Judgment. This site brings together different architectural styles and religious imagery. A church is believed to have already stood in Althofen around the year 1000. The filial church of Althofen is dedicated to St. Bartholomew and stands in a walled churchyard.
Feistritz Castle offers further insight into architectural history: the late medieval fortified structure was converted into a castle in the 16th century. The castle provides a festive setting for concerts, readings, and weddings. Sculptures and wooden objects by the Leitner family are displayed at the Hans and Marga Leitner studio.
