Grundlsee: Discover the lake, trails and culture
Accommodation in Grundlsee
Covering an area of 4.22 km², Grundlsee is the largest lake in Styria. A large part of the municipality is under the strictest nature protection. For orientation, these are two different measures: the area figure applies to the lake, while the protection status applies to a large part of the municipality. This makes it possible to understand the destination both through a single geographical feature and as part of a larger natural area. The water, trails, local history and weather-dependent activities offer different points of interest for your stay.
Trails and Lakeside Spots
The 3-Lakes Tour crosses Lake Grundlsee, continues to Lake Toplitzsee and finally reaches Lake Kammersee. It begins with a boat trip across Lake Grundlsee, continues on foot to Lake Toplitzsee and ends with a traditional flatboat ride to Lake Kammersee. The order is important when planning: the boat trip is followed by the walk, before the flatboat ride brings the tour to a close. The section to Lake Toplitzsee is therefore covered on foot; the three lakes appear in a set sequence. This lets you distinguish the tour, with its changes between travel by water and on foot, from a single boat trip.
The Grundlsee Geotrail starts on the western edge of the village and follows the hiking trail along the southern shore. This is a different kind of route from the 3-Lakes Tour: the Geotrail focuses on the route along one side of the lake, while the tour takes in several lakes and involves different ways of getting around. Lake Toplitzsee is also a point of reference for Ranftlmühle: the mill stands nearby and can be reached on foot from Gößl. This gives the same lake two different roles: as a stage of a tour and as a landmark for a place you can reach. Trail conditions may change in winter. Bear this possibility in mind if you are planning a visit during this season.
Local History and Tradition
Grundlsee’s cultural history is reflected in more than just the construction dates of its buildings. In Gößl on Lake Grundlsee, a village judge is still elected annually from among the village farmers. This is a recurring tradition, not a single historical date. The parish church of Grundlsee in Styria was built in the neo-Gothic style between 1888 and 1890; the Rebenburg promenade on the right bank of the Grundlseer Traun was opened earlier, in 1882. The two dates can be placed in chronological order: the promenade opened a few years before the church. In this way, a recurring annual custom sits alongside historic sites from the late 19th century.
Seasonal Information and Access
When the weather is suitable, the Zloam tennis court becomes a 1,600 m² natural ice rink. The Kaiserlicher Stall, by contrast, opens only for events, vernissages and exhibitions. These are two different conditions to keep in mind when planning: at Zloam, the weather matters; at the stall, a relevant event is required. Plan a visit to the Kaiserlicher Stall accordingly.
