Untertal is in the Rohrmoos district and is a popular destination for walks and day trips for nature lovers, hikers and families. With its trails, waterscapes and natural features, Rohrmoos-Untertal appeals to a range of travel interests.

Experience Hiking Trails and Water

In Untertal, the Wilde Wasser theme trail follows the Talbach through varied natural landscapes. It is divided into six stages and can be explored in sections via several access points. This gives you a clear starting point for planning: you can think of the trail in stages rather than treating all six sections as a single hike. The Rohrmoos Loop has a different focus. It is a route for beginners, with no major climbs, through the landscapes of Schladming, Obertal, Rohrmoos and Pichl, offering a different way to experience the area.

At Riesach Waterfall, a striking natural feature meets a named trail: the waterfall plunges into the valley in two cascades, dropping a total of 140 metres, and the “Durch die Höll” alpine trail runs alongside the waterfall to Riesachsee. On Hochwurzen, you can ride mountain go-karts down a 7-kilometre-long toboggan run. So, alongside hiking, there is also a summer activity and a striking waterfall destination to choose from as distinct travel interests.

Moorland, Plants and Nature Trails

Tettermoor is a flow-through bog in Rohrmooser Untertal. Many rare plant species adapted to low-silicate, low-calcium conditions grow in and around the bog. You can also experience nature up close: at Tettermoor, you can walk barefoot for a few steps along the meandering Untertalbach. The bog landscape, distinctive plants and stream each give the area its own character.

On the Roßfeld nature trail, information boards share facts about the region’s flora and fauna. You can also admire a 1,000-year-old Swiss stone pine there. Along the Bankerlweg, hand-carved life-size animal sculptures provide information about local wildlife. Each of the three experiences has a different focus: the bog draws attention to distinctive plants and habitats, while Roßfeld and the Bankerlweg share nature knowledge through information boards and sculptures, respectively.

Views and Winter Trails

The Sonnenrunde Rohrmoos offers views of Schladming, the Obere Klaus district, Pichl and the Dachstein massif. Johannahöhe offers a romantic view into Obertal. These named viewpoints add a scenic perspective to the theme trails, without requiring you to choose the same destinations as you would on a hike along the Talbach.

The season also shapes what you can do: the winter hiking trails in Rohrmoos are rolled and smoothed with a roller. For planning, it is worth sorting your hiking ideas by season and choosing the specific destinations that suit your travel plans.

Mining History in Obertal

In Obertal near Schladming, the Hopfriesen Nickel Museum is housed in a “glass display case” amid the natural landscape of the Schladminger Tauern. It offers a glimpse into the era of mining, when nickel extraction shaped everyday life. This cultural history adds another option alongside hiking trails, moorland and waterfalls. When looking for a hotel, you can decide whether you would like to focus mainly on trails and water, nature watching, views, or also include mining history in your trip. When choosing, check the specific location of each offer in relation to the destinations you would like to visit.
