Wildon lies where the Mur and Kainach rivers meet. The town’s character for visitors is shaped above all by Wildon Schlossberg, an archaeological site, trails with literary or spiritual connections, and the Hengist Museum. Depending on whether you want to explore history, discover literature or experience a trail on foot, different themes come to the fore.

Schlossberg and Archaeological History

Wildon Schlossberg is one of the most exceptional archaeological sites in the southeastern Alpine region. You can explore it on foot, including its castle ruins. This brings into focus both the site’s special significance and the historical remains on the hill. Schlossberg thus links archaeology with a specific place you can experience on foot. The Hengist Museum provides a complementary historical perspective on the region: its overview spans the period from the first settled farmers in the Neolithic to the Middle Ages.

The Literature Trail and Its Stops

At eight stops, the Wildon Literature Trail tells passages from “The Cat,” a verse novella by Herrand von Wildon. The route runs from the town center over the historic castle hill and down to the Kainach. This makes it easy to follow the route through a clear sequence of areas: from the center, over the hill and down to the river. At the same time, the eight stops give the literary theme its own structure along the route. For travelers who want to combine literature with a walk, the focus here is on Herrand von Wildon and his work.

Walking Trails and Pilgrimage Connections

The section of the Southern Austrian Way of St. James through Wildon is also marked with scallop-shell signs. This distinguishes its pilgrimage connection from the literary focus of the Wildon Literature Trail: here, the signs mark the Way of St. James, while there, eight stops tell passages from a verse novella. These can therefore be considered different starting points for a stay, without combining them into a single route. In addition to Schlossberg, Buchkogel is also a sight you can experience on foot. Visitors who want to focus their trip on trails will therefore find several different themes in Wildon, not just one main route.

Hengist Museum: From the Neolithic to the Middle Ages

The Hengist Museum Wildon is located in Wildon Castle. Its archaeological exhibition space offers insights into prehistory, Roman times and the Middle Ages. The museum also provides an overview of the development of central Styria, from the arrival of the first settled farmers in the Neolithic to the Middle Ages. Its time span thus connects an early period in the history of settlement with the later Middle Ages. If you are interested in several historical periods, you can make this regional overview a focus of your stay alongside Wildon’s specific places and trails.

Events and the Open-Air Stage

Many events take place at the Schloss Wildon cultural center. If an event is the reason for your trip, its specific date is a good starting point for planning; check the event details before finalizing your trip. Independently of this, the Wildon Schlossberg stage is an open-air stage on Wildon Schlossberg. These two details illustrate different cultural aspects of Wildon: the cultural center as a venue for many events and the open-air stage as a performance space on the Schlossberg.

Another Connection to the Cycle Path

In Wildon, a route joins the Murradweg R2. This adds a connection to the cycle path alongside the sights that can be experienced on foot. Different interests can therefore be considered when planning your trip: archaeology and castle ruins at Schlossberg, literature along the trail, the pilgrimage connection of the Way of St. James, the museum’s history and the Murradweg R2.
