Nestelberg: Prehistoric Settlement and Routes
Accommodation in Nestelberg
Nestelberg, also called Königsberg, combines a striking landscape feature with prehistoric settlement and several described routes. The dual name helps with orientation: Königsberg is the flattened summit above the Sulm, also known as Nestelberg. There are also historical traces from the Heimschuher basin and a dedicated look at the craft of oil production in the municipality of Heimschuh.
Nestelberg and Königsberg
Nestelberg is a flattened summit at around 424 m above sea level, overlooking the Sulm. The name Königsberg refers to the same mountain and also appears in the route descriptions, so it is useful to keep in mind when reading the route names. A remarkably well-preserved prehistoric settlement is located on Nestelberg. It offers a tangible historical connection for anyone who wants to consider earlier settlement alongside the landscape when planning a trip.
Prehistoric and Historical Traces
The Roman road ran westward along the southern edge of the Heimschuher basin, south of Königsberg. The locations are described separately: the settlement is on the mountain, while the road is placed along the southern edge of the basin and its westward route. The remains of a fortification are now known as the “Hoferlippen-Waldschloss.”
Routes with Different Features
On the routes, variant 5a of the Heimschuh South Loop should be distinguished from Loop No. 5. Variant 5a connects Heimschuh and Nestelberg along the municipal road; the route has only minor elevation changes. The Heimschuh South Loop No. 5, by contrast, passes over Königsberg to Gasthaus Koschak. Thus, one description names the Heimschuh–Nestelberg connection and its minor elevation changes, while the other describes a route over Königsberg and a destination at the inn.
Another named route is the western route of the Sulmtal Sausal Panorama Gallery – Art & Wine No. 6. It passes over Königsberg between Heimschuh and Fresing. Its two named locations and the designation “western route” distinguish it from the other routes; its link to Königsberg connects it with the Heimschuh South Loop No. 5.
The Sulmtal Cycle Route R1 is also one of the cycling routes associated with Nestelberg or Königsberg. When choosing a route, it helps to distinguish this association from the routes explicitly described as passing over Königsberg.
Oil Production in Heimschuh
In the municipality of Heimschuh, the museum in the mill building of the Hartlieb oil mill showcases oil production, the raw materials required for it and the use of historical equipment. Customs and traditions from earlier times are also among its topics. The focus is therefore not only on production, but also on materials, tools and everyday culture in the past.
Visitors can watch the oil pressing in the Hartlieb oil mill’s workshop. While the museum covers production and its historical context, the workshop focuses on the pressing process itself. For travelers interested in local crafts, the background on oil production and its practical demonstration complement each other.
