Hohentauern combines winter sports with hiking trails, nature experiences, and insights into local history. To plan your stay, it’s worth deciding on a focus first: Would you like to include ski slopes and cross-country skiing, are you interested in trails around the Großer Scheibelsee, or in cultural and nature topics? The attractions offer a range of experiences—from winter sports and specific hiking trails to stops that bring the landscape and history to life.

Skiing and cross-country skiing

Ski Hohentauern offers 11 km of slopes of all difficulty levels, from blue to red to black. There are also natural-snow slopes and a snowmaking system that extends from the valley station to the middle station. The 14 km Tauern cross-country ski trail for skating and classic cross-country skiing starts right at the valley station. The cross-country ski trail in Hohentauern has been awarded the Styrian Trail Quality Seal and is designed for beginners and experts alike. Operating seasons, snow conditions, and grooming can change; check current conditions if winter sports will determine when you travel.

Hiking trails around the GroĂźer Scheibelsee

The Großer Scheibelsee is located in the Rottenmanner Tauern in Styria, at the foot of the Bösenstein in Hohentauern in the Murtal. You can reach the lake via the toll road to the Edelrautehütte and then take a short hike from there. Well-marked hiking trails run around the lake through dense forests, where tall Swiss stone pines can be seen here and there. When planning, take both the toll road and the walk that follows into account; road and trail conditions may vary.

The “7 Heavenly Places” feature cloud benches with views of the surrounding natural landscape and peaceful spots. This makes the offer different from the hiking trails at the Scheibelsee: the focus here is on the views and a quiet place in the landscape.

History, nature, and themed trails

The Hohentauern Schauplatzwanderung passes ten stations with information boards. Topics include the history of Hohentauern, its residents, and the natural landscape. Along the Water Trail, the hike also features various activity stations and a barefoot trail.

The “In the Footsteps of the Celts” Quest Trail starts on the terrace of Mountain Adventure Golf and combines an escape game, a scavenger hunt, and a puzzle trail. Check whether this activity is available before your trip.

The show mine recalls Hohentauern’s significant magnesite and graphite mining industry. Hohentauern Nature Experience Park includes a high plateau at over 1,000 metres, with mountain pastures, raised bogs, and small lakes. Together, these themes showcase different sides of the area: mining history, nature, and a glimpse into earlier ways of life.
