Semriach: Lurgrotte, mountain scenery and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Semriach
When looking for a hotel in Semriach, you can plan your trip around the topics that interest you most: caves and mountains, nature and animal-related activities, or historic sites. Semriach offers a variety of options in these areas. The following details give you an idea of what you can focus on during a stay here.
Landscape and caves
The Lurgrotte Semriach is considered Austria’s largest stalactite cave. Inside it, the Great Dome is 120 metres long, 80 metres wide and 40 metres high. Its length and width far exceed its height, giving you an impression of the dimensions of this cave chamber. You can explore the Lurgrotte on well-maintained paths as part of a guided tour lasting around 70 minutes.
Distinctive natural sites also shape the selection above ground. The trail through the Kesselfallklamm gorge leads over numerous steps and bridges and includes a waterfall you can walk behind. The gorge is classified as a protected natural monument. This means the trail highlights both the area’s distinctive landscape features and its protected status.
The municipality of Semriach includes five mountains over 1,000 metres high: Schöckl at 1,445 metres, Fragnerberg at 1,109 metres, Rinnweberkogel at 1,041 metres, Hochtrötsch at 1,239 metres and Windhofkogel at 1,064 metres. The range spans from Rinnweberkogel to Schöckl. The five names and elevations give you a clear overview of the mountainous landscape within the municipality.
Activities for a range of interests
The animal-related activities vary considerably. Alpaka Zottlerhof offers alpaca walks, with a picnic available on request. It also offers yoga in the alpaca pasture. Islandpferdehof Hoyos offers trail rides and riding lessons. Among these activities, you can find both exercise with animals and a yoga session in the company of alpacas.
The Semriach adventure pool offers a different kind of leisure activity: this family-friendly outdoor pool has a slide and a pool café. Along with the trails through Kesselfallklamm and the activities involving horses and alpacas, the pool shows how varied leisure interests can be. When planning, it is helpful to consider these options according to their individual focus rather than grouping them together as similar activities.
Church, chapel and local history
The Gothic parish church of Saint Aegidius stands on the site of an ancient Roman church dating from 1100. Ulrichsbrunn Chapel was built over a spring in 1720; the spring is said to have healing powers for eye complaints. The chapel’s construction history and the traditional belief about the spring are therefore linked; the healing effect remains an attribution.
The Roman tomb is a restored Roman burial mound preserved in situ and is considered the only one of its kind in Austria. At the fire brigade museum, you can see numerous items of equipment from the Semriach Volunteer Fire Brigade, dating from its founding in 1891 onward. These two sites offer different perspectives on the past: the Roman tomb is an archaeological record, while the museum focuses on the equipment of the local fire brigade.
Kunsthalle K2 is located in Semriach’s market square and presents new exhibitions at regular intervals. Check the current exhibition dates before your visit. This will help you include the cultural offering in your plans.
Local production
If you are interested in local production as well as the landscape and history, Thir Beekeeping offers another point of interest. It has a long family tradition of bee-keeping in harmony with nature and sells various types of honey directly on site. These include blossom honey, cream honey and forest honey. The varieties and family tradition offer a different perspective from Semriach’s caves, natural sites and historic locations.
