Krimml: Waterfalls, Hiking and Hotels
Accommodation in Krimml
When planning a stay in Krimml, it is worth sorting your interests in excursions: topics include the Krimml Waterfalls, the interactive water exhibition, a hike through the valley, the Leitenkammer Gorge, as well as cycling and cross-country skiing.
Waterfalls and the World of Water
With a height of 380 metres, the Krimml Waterfalls are considered the highest waterfalls in Europe. On the way there, wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments can only reach the lowest waterfall. As access conditions may change seasonally, please check them before your visit.
The House of Water is located opposite the Waterfall Center. Its interactive exhibition, “Faces of Water,” presents the journey of water from mist and haze to droplets and snow crystals, as well as streams and seas, all the way to the eternal ice of Antarctica. The exhibition’s themes therefore span phenomena in the atmosphere, bodies of water and icy landscapes.
Valley Hike and Leitenkammer Gorge
The Krimmler Achental is the longest and highest-altitude valley in the Venediger Group. Alpine farming has been practiced there since the Middle Ages. For hikers, the easy valley hike to the Krimmler Tauernhaus is a specific way to explore the valley on foot; it takes about 3½ hours. Plan this hike as a separate, longer activity. The distinctive landscape and long tradition of alpine farming give the Achental both natural and cultural significance.
The Leitenkammer Gorge offers a different view of the landscape: the powerful Wildgerlosbach glacier stream carved it out, creating potholes and other erosional features. The gorge is easily accessible, with viewing platforms along the way. From the Finkau inn, the path leads through a spruce forest and takes about 30 minutes on foot. The time estimates clearly distinguish between the two excursions: access to the gorge takes about half an hour, while the easy valley hike to the Krimmler Tauernhaus takes about 3½ hours.
Cycling and Cross-Country Skiing
The Tauern Cycle Path can also be described by its location in town and the direction of its stages. Just beyond the train station, the signposted cycle path branches off to the left from the main road and crosses the Krimmler Ache. The first stage of the Tauern Cycle Path starts in Krimml and heads towards Mittersill. This identifies both a prominent landmark in town and the start and direction of the stage.
In Hochkrimml, there is a panoramic cross-country ski trail with wonderful views of the mountain scenery of the Zillertal Alps and the Hohe Tauern. Cross-country skiing is therefore another focus alongside the waterfall and hiking themes. If you are looking for hotels in Krimml, you can use the excursions described as a starting point for planning your trip. The 200 km Pinzgau Trail is also part of the cross-country skiing offerings in Krimml’s Winter Wonderland.
