Discover Högmoos
Accommodation in Högmoos
There are several ways to plan a stay in Högmoos: an easy loop with an estimated walking time, another hike with named waypoints, a stage of the Tauern Cycle Path, fishing opportunities at the reservoir and an annual Maypole tradition. You can tailor your trip to whether hiking, cycling, fishing or local history is your priority.
Hiking: two different loops
The Högmoos–Hasenbach loop starts and ends in Högmoos. It is rated as easy, with a walking time of around 1.5 hours. From the small minimarket, the route climbs through a charming old lane to Kleinsonnberg, branches off towards Hasenbach and returns to the starting point along a narrow path. For planning your day, this loop combines an estimated duration with a difficulty rating and specific waypoints. Check trail conditions before setting out.
The Wiesfleck loop can be identified by a different sequence of places: it starts in the Högmoos district, follows the Salzach to Gries, climbs to Pension Wiesfleck and returns to Högmoos via Thannberg. For the Hasenbach loop, the estimated walking time and easy rating help with planning; for the Wiesfleck loop, the named places give you a sense of the route. This lets you choose between a loop with a stated duration and a hike whose description focuses mainly on its course through several stops.
Cycle path and routes along the Salzach
On the third stage of the Tauern Cycle Path, the route reaches the Högmoos dam and then switches to the north bank of the Salzach. The dam is also a reference point on Stage 08 of the Pinzgau Marienweg: from there, you can take a detour to the hamlet of Högmoos on the left bank of the Salzach. The descriptions refer to different routes. For the Tauern Cycle Path, the focus is on reaching the dam and then switching to the north bank; for the Marienweg, it is the detour to the hamlet on the left bank. When planning your activities, it helps to keep the relevant stage and its described route in mind.
Bronze Age and Maypole tradition
Högmoos is documented as a Bronze Age settlement site; pottery from this period has also been found there. These two points give the local history a long-term perspective, providing a distinct focus alongside today’s hiking and cycling routes.
A recurring event in the annual calendar is the raising of the Maypole: a Maypole is erected in Högmoos every year, followed by the May Festival on State Holiday. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates in advance.
Fishing at the reservoir
Guests can fish at the Högmoos reservoir. If fishing is part of your plans, find out about fishing permits, the season and applicable rules before your trip. This makes it easy to include fishing as a specific focus of your stay without confusing it with the routes of the hiking and cycling trails.
