Accommodation in Puch near Hallein
Castle and church history, marked trails and Carrera WORLD offer different ways to plan your time in Puch near Hallein. Getting there is also straightforward to plan: in addition to the motorway, a suburban rail connection and walking routes are mentioned.
Castles and historic landmarks
Several construction periods come together at Urstein Castle. The old complex, including today’s Maierei and outbuildings, dates in essence to the 15th century. The new castle was rebuilt in the Baroque style around 1700; its present form dates from 1701, under Alfons Dückher Freiherr von Haslau. Puchstein Castle tells a different story: according to old chronicles, it was first mentioned in 822. In the Middle Ages, it was used to oversee salt shipping.
Puch Parish Church is late Gothic and has a pointed-helmet tower; it was first mentioned in a document in 1347. Beside its entrance, a Roman milestone marks the seventh mile of the important Juvavum–Teurina trade route, the Salzburg–Carinthia connection. The wood-carved Puch Palm Donkey with its figure of Christ can be viewed year-round in the bell tower. The figure was part of an Easter procession tradition that was popular in the Middle Ages.
Churches and traditions in St. Jakob am Thurn
The pilgrimage church of St. Jakob am Thurn is a Baroque Roman Catholic parish church dedicated to St. James the Greater. A church in St. Jakob am Thurn was first mentioned in a document in 1238. The Loreto Chapel there was built in 1753 under Josef Anton Graf Platz.
The traditional Jakobikirtag includes the historic marksmen’s dance performed by the Jakobischützen of St. Jakob am Thurn. It takes place every year on the last Sunday in July. The Advent market stalls open every Advent weekend by the pilgrimage church of St. James the Greater. Dates and arrangements may change; check the current event schedule before visiting.
Hiking trails and walks
Puch has eight signposted hiking trails ranging from easy to moderately difficult. They lead from the village to the leisure facility, up the Almerberg or to the Urstein footbridge. The number of trails may change if the local network is revised. The leisure facility is for recreation and is reserved for the citizens of Puch.
The agricultural theme trail offers a different focus: eleven information boards line the marked village loop along the Sister Hildegard Trail. They are in place year-round, around the clock, along the signposted hiking trail, which is suitable for strollers. While information boards shape the route here, other hiking routes in Puch lead, among other places, to the Hubertus Chapel on the Schönalm. A winter hike also leads to this chapel. There is also an alpine pasture hike above St. Jakob am Thurn.
A walking path along the Salzach passes the scenic Urstein footbridge, near Salzburg University of Applied Sciences and Urstein Castle. For a longer bike ride, a cycling route guide lists Salzburg’s historic old town as a destination: from Puch, it lies to the north, about 9.5 kilometres or around 30 minutes by bike. According to the guide, the route offers views of Hohensalzburg Fortress and the river landscape along the way. The stated travel time is an estimate and may vary depending on conditions.
