Villa District and Local History

Lawies is characterised by a remarkable collection of historicist villas dating from 1875 to 1910, set among large gardens. Historicist refers to an architectural style that draws on earlier styles. The term helps place the villas in their architectural era; the gardens are also part of this picture.

A further historical development is recorded for upper Lawies: between 1870 and 1900, 45 villas, one hotel and two commercial buildings were built there. The periods overlap but refer to different contexts: the villa stock in Lawies from 1875 to 1910 and the development of upper Lawies from 1870 to 1900. This comparison helps place the town’s history in context by period and by the areas mentioned.

Knabstraße, by the railway station, provides a point of orientation in the town. To this day, it is the actual centre of Lawies-Tullnerbach. The original Tullnerbach railway station building no longer exists. Tullnerbach-Pressbaum railway station is located in the village of Tullnerbach-Lawies in the Wien Valley.

Cultural Trail and Historic Buildings

The Norbertinum offers another way to explore architectural history. Construction of this extensive four-wing historicist complex began in 1881. It served as a teaching and educational institution run by the Catholic Orphan Relief Association and was directed by the Congregation of the Christian Brothers. This building brings together the architectural style described and its former institutional use.

The Tullnerbach Cultural Trail includes a stop dedicated to Richard Genée at the corner of Egererstraße and Genéestraße. Professor-Rudolf-Pleban-Park is also a stop on the trail. These are two specific places to explore Tullnerbach’s cultural heritage.

The former Tullnerbach municipal offices are a listed building and once housed the municipal administration, post office and gendarmerie under one roof. The building contains a historic council chamber, restored wall paintings and a former gendarmerie detention cell. These details add specific insights into the building’s interior to the story of its former use.
