Strohmarkt: History, Trails and Nature
Accommodation in Strohmarkt
Strohmarkt combines local history with trails through forest and alpine pastureland. Cycling and skiing are additional activities in the Göstling area.
Local History and Culture
The “Niederbach” Schusterhaus at Strohmarkt No. 2 has a history dating back four hundred years. It has been preserved, and the Eibner family maintains it and lives there. It offers a tangible example of local history in the form of a specific house that is still inhabited today.
At the Mendlingtal Adventure World, the “Auf dem Holzweg” (“On the Woodcutter’s Trail”) themed trail tells the story of woodcutters, charcoal burners and blacksmith apprentices. The surrounding area features gorges, winding streams and diverse plant life. Historic work is set alongside a landscape of forests and water, setting this trail apart from the single historic residence in Strohmarkt. The Adventure World has seasonal opening arrangements. Check visiting dates before your trip if you plan to follow the themed trail.
Trails through Strohmarkt and the Surrounding Area
The NaturWaldWeg stage from Göstling to Hollenstein passes through the Strohmarkt district, where the local road meets the B 25 (Erlauftalstraße). The stage includes asphalt, forestry roads, woodland paths and alpine pastureland. When planning, therefore, consider the different types of trail as well as the start and finish points. Check trail conditions before setting out.
On this stage, the route branches off onto the road signposted “7Hütten” to Siebenhütten; the Wasserfallweg then leads through a gorge-like forest. Follow the current local signs as you walk. From Strohmarkt, a partly asphalted path also leads to the buildings of Schwölleckau-Alm at an altitude of 800 metres in about 30 minutes. This description provides another specific travel-time and altitude detail to help you plan.
Cycling and Skiing
The 111-kilometre Ybbstal Cycle Route passes through Göstling an der Ybbs and connects the Danube with Lake Lunzer See. Here, the focus is on the connection between two endpoints; on the NaturWaldWeg, the stage route, trail surfaces and landmarks are what matter. If you are planning a cycling trip, check the latest route information before setting out.
The Hochkar ski area is located in the alpine region of Göstling and has 19 kilometres of pistes at altitudes of 1,380 to 1,800 metres. Beginners, experts and freeriders can ski there. Piste length and altitude offer a different focus from cycling and hiking trails. Snow and lift conditions vary seasonally; check them before making specific winter plans.
Accommodation and Restaurant
The Stanglwirt inn has a rustic dining room with a tiled stove. The restaurant is open only to overnight guests and regular customers; confirm access directly before planning a meal. Before your trip, also check current availability if you are considering the inn for your stay.
