Scheibbs: Hiking, Nature and History
Accommodation in Scheibbs
A stay in Scheibbs brings together a range of interests: hikes to distinctive destinations, a natural monument and places of cultural and historical interest. The destinations differ in route type and theme, from the 844-metre-high Blassenstein to historic buildings and exhibitions.
Hiking and Nature Around Scheibbs
The Urlingerwarte is a landmark of Scheibbs and a symbol of the views of the surrounding mountains. From town, you can hike to the lookout tower along various routes. As routes and seasonal access options may change, check the route relevant to your visit in advance.
Blassenstein is the local mountain of the people of Scheibbs and, at 844 metres, a specific destination for a classic hike. The 52-kilometre Höhenrundwanderweg, which loops around Scheibbs, is a different kind of route. You can choose between a hike to a named mountain and a circular trail.
Another option is the 75-kilometre Via Aqua circular route, which connects Scheibbs, Purgstall, Gaming and St. Anton. Along the Erlauf and Jeßnitz rivers are 23 droplet-shaped WASSER-WISSEN stations and scenic rest areas. Water knowledge is the route’s central theme. The routes also differ clearly in length: Via Aqua is 23 kilometres longer than the 52-kilometre Höhenrundwanderweg.
A natural attraction is the disused tuff quarry in Neustift, a district of Scheibbs. It is designated as a natural monument. Allow about two hours for your visit, including walking time. Visit arrangements and contact details may change; check them in advance.
Mountain Biking in Burgerhofwald
The Trail.Zone Blassenstein, a mountain bike skills area, is located in Burgerhofwald. There, you can learn and practise mountain biking techniques in a fun and safe way. Use is subject to local rules and operating conditions; take these into account when planning your visit.
Town History and Culture
The year 1338 is a historic starting point: when Scheibbs passed to the Carthusian Order of Gaming, the order expanded Scheibbs Castle into an administrative centre for its extensive estates. The Powder Tower is the town’s oldest surviving defensive tower; remnants of the town walls can also be seen nearby. Exhibitions are now held in the Powder Tower.
The SchĂĽtzenscheiben Museum displays more than 200 exhibits featuring local historical, political and humorous motifs. They date from 1670 to the present day. The different groups of motifs give the collection a broad thematic range. Exhibition programmes and content may change; check the current dates and details before your visit.
Concerts are also held from time to time in the arcaded courtyard of Scheibbs Castle. If you would like to combine your trip with a concert, check the dates for your travel period, as the programme may change.
Getting There by Train and Bus
Scheibbs is the terminus of the Erlauftalbahn railway and the starting point for six bus routes. If you are travelling by public transport, check the current timetables and routes before departure; rail and bus networks may change over time.
For planning purposes, the options are easy to distinguish: Blassenstein is a specific hiking destination, the two circular routes differ in length, and the cultural attractions include historic buildings, exhibitions and recurring concerts. Choose according to which of these themes is most important to you during your stay in Scheibbs.
