Kapelln brings together a geographical landmark with hiking and cultural themes. This offers different ways to plan your trip: the Max-Schubert observation tower, with its views across the landscape; trails for walking and Nordic walking; and historic buildings. You can decide which of these themes will shape your stay by looking at the specific trail and cultural attractions on offer.

Geographical Centre and Views

The Max-Schubert observation tower marks the exact geographical centre of Lower Austria. From the tower, you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views of the foothills of the Alps as far as the Ă–tscher. The adventure trail around the centre of Lower Austria is free of charge and open all year round; its interactive stations are seasonal. If you would like to experience these stations, take their seasonal availability into account when planning your visit.

The observation tower and adventure trail both focus on the same centre, but offer different experiences: the tower is all about the panoramic views, while the adventure trail focuses on the centre itself. This lets you choose between a landscape panorama and a themed trail for your stay.

Trails with Different Focuses

The nature trail starts at the Petronillabach, just behind the church, and is suitable for walking and Nordic walking. These two activities are specifically associated with the trail. Another option is the circular hiking trail in Kapelln, which is listed as a permanent hiking trail in the IVV rating. This gives you three distinct points of reference when choosing a trail: the nature trail and its stated activities, the circular hiking trail with its IVV classification, and the adventure trail, which focuses on the centre and has seasonal interactive stations.

The Purkersdorf–Göttweig Way of St James passes by the Max-Schubert observation tower. If this route is the main reason for your trip, the tower is a specific landmark along the way. You can therefore consider this viewpoint both in relation to the centre of Lower Austria and its position along the route.

The Church and the History of the Castle

The Late Gothic parish church in Kapelln is dedicated to Saint Petronilla. Its Baroque high altar features a painting of the “Assumption of Mary” by Daniel Gran. The building thus brings together two art-historical periods: the Late Gothic church and the Baroque altar with its religious subject. You can look inside the church through the entrance by the bell tower; check before your visit whether access is currently available.

Thalheim Castle near Kapelln dates back to the 17th century. It adds another historical period to the Late Gothic church and its Baroque high altar. On a cultural and historical visit, you can explore buildings from different eras.

When looking for a hotel in Kapelln, you can choose your trip’s focus based on these differences. If views and the geographical centre are your priority, the observation tower is the clear choice; the trails offer different options for outdoor activities, while the parish church and castle provide distinct historical points of interest.
