Frankenfels is part of the Pielach Valley, also known as Dirndltal. Your travel plans can be shaped around different interests: caves and gorges, viewpoints and hiking trails, or activities focused on history and regional culture. If you are looking for a hotel, distinguishing between these themes can help you organize your stay.

Caves, Viewpoints and Hiking Trails

The Nix Cave in Frankenfels is a dripstone cave formed from snow-white mountain milk. It is 1,410 m long and has an elevation difference of 70 m. Guided tours for groups are available at any time by prior arrangement. If you are planning a tour, be sure to include the booking in your preparations.

The high plateau of Falkenstein lies at an elevation of 720 m. From there, the view extends across the town of Frankenfels, the opposite Frankenfelsberg mountain and the Natterstal valley. In addition, numerous marked walking and hiking trails lead from Frankenfels to viewpoints above 1,000 m, with views towards the Ă–tscher region. The different elevations offer different perspectives: the plateau provides the stated views of three places and landscape areas, while the marked trails lead to higher viewpoints.

The Taubenbach Gorge adds a gorge with hiking trails and a forest nature trail to these walking and viewpoint options. This gives you specific nature experiences to choose from when planning: trails through a gorge and an educational trail in the forest.

History and Regional Culture

The Hausstein Mountain Farmers’ Museum in Frankenfels displays around 2,000 exhibits across 400 m². They cover crafts, household life, agriculture and everyday life on a mountain farm. The topics therefore range from practical crafts to daily life on the farm.

The legendary hiking trail from Frankenfels via Puchenstuben and St. Anton an der JeĂźnitz offers a different way to explore regional history. Along the trail, you can discover stories about the formation of the valley, relics from the past and legends from earlier times. While the museum displays exhibits about everyday life and agriculture, the hiking trail focuses on stories and relics.

At the Dirndl Mostheuriger Hausstein, “woodcutters’ Sterz” or Feuerflecken are prepared over an open fire by prior arrangement. Prior booking is required if you would like to plan to have either of these dishes.

Climbing, Swimming and Guided Tours

Frankenfels has four climbing gardens with around 200 routes of all difficulty levels. If you are including climbing in your travel plans, you will find a selection of routes here at varying levels of difficulty.

The Frankenfels Alpine Outdoor Pool has a 33 m-long water slide. It is located between tennis courts, a beach volleyball court and a children’s playground. The pool can therefore be described in terms of the slide and the facilities in its surroundings.

Guided tours of the Mariazell Railway Operations Centre at LaubenbachmĂĽhle are available on request. They last about 50 minutes and must be booked with the NĂ–VOG Information Centre at least two weeks before the requested date. Allow for this advance notice if you would like to request a tour.
