Vösendorf: Castle History, Museum and Nativity Scene Building
Accommodation in Vösendorf
Vösendorf offers topics ranging from castle history and cycling culture to nativity scene building and events. If you are planning a hotel stay, you can organise your visits around your interests: the castle and church offer insights into local history, the bicycle museum focuses on technology and culture, while the town trail and lido offer other points of interest. Some destinations also have seasonal conditions or require advance booking.
Castle and history
Vösendorf Castle was first built around 1200; its present appearance dates back to the 17th century. It is located in the middle of Vösendorf Castle Park. The two dates describe different aspects of its history: its original construction and the later creation of its present form. The Peter Jordan Memorial Room honours the life and work of agricultural pioneer Peter Jordan (1751–1827).
Vösendorf Parish Church also has its own historical context: it is a hall church dating from 1628 and was rebuilt in 1686. Vösendorf Castle Chapel can be visited during the usual opening hours of the municipal offices. Check in advance whether a visit is possible on your chosen day.
The bicycle museum and its themes
The Vösendorf Castle Bicycle Museum opened in 2000. Its exhibition is divided into four sections: the development of the bicycle, technical rarities, the cycling section and bicycle culture. The range of topics therefore spans technological development, sport and cultural significance. The different sections offer several ways to explore the museum: you can focus on technology or discover the exhibition through its sporting and cultural themes.
You can visit on the first Saturday of each month from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. or by appointment. Check in advance which visiting option is currently available. This lets you plan your museum visit around your stay rather than assuming the stated hours guarantee access at any time.
Walking, nativity scene building and group visits
Town Trail 12 passes through Vösendorf and is marked on the mobile town map. The map’s availability may depend on the town mapping service; check in advance if necessary whether you can use it. The trail offers a different focus from the exhibition and historical themes.
The Vösendorf Nativity Scene Association organises courses where you can learn the craft of building nativity scenes. Since 2004, it has been possible to take the examination for master nativity scene builder at the Lower Austrian School of Nativity Scene Building. There is also the First Lower Austrian Nativity Scene Museum, which welcomes groups of ten or more by appointment. Courses, the master examination and group visits thus offer different ways to engage with nativity scene building. If you are planning a group visit, allow for the required advance booking.
Events and seasonal conditions
The KulturGewölbe, which can accommodate 100 people, regularly hosts events such as cabaret, musicals, concerts and readings. These formats range from stage performances to music and literature; if a particular event is a deciding factor for your trip, plan around its date.
Vösendorf Lido is open to season pass holders from 1 May to 30 September. Guests can buy day tickets, but may enter the pond area only when accompanied by a season pass holder. Check the current seasonal conditions before your visit and observe the accompaniment rule if you plan to use a day ticket.
If a particular date or visit is a deciding factor, check the relevant times and booking information in advance. This will help you plan your stay around what you actually want to visit.
