Guntramsdorf lies like a green oasis in the heart of Lower Austria’s thermal spa region, just outside Vienna. A stay here offers a variety of themes: the history of the former castle, local and industrial history, a valuable nature reserve, as well as winegrowing and Heuriger wine tavern culture. When planning your stay, you can choose what to focus on—for example, museums, longer circular hikes or a seasonal wine festival.

Castle history and museums

The garden pavilion in Guntramsdorf is the only surviving part of the former castle. The first floor of the pavilion houses a ceremonial hall with an extensive collection of frescoes. Grotesques and chinoiserie appear alongside festive and banquet scenes; exotic animals and masks are also among the motifs. The pavilion thus combines a surviving testament to the castle’s history with a varied decorative programme.

The Guntramsdorf Local History Museum – Ernst Wurth documents more than 5,000 years of local history. Its offerings include themed specialist tours, tours for children, walks around the town and film screenings. These activities take place by prior arrangement. If you plan to join a tour, take a walk or attend a screening, remember to make the required arrangements when planning your visit.

The Walzengravieranstalt Museum is an industrial monument: the fully preserved factory complex dates from the late 19th century and contains an extensive array of machinery. All the machines and tools, as well as the rare central line-shaft system, still work at the push of a button, just as they have for decades. Groups of five or more can visit the museum at any time by prior arrangement.

Nature and outdoor activities

Eichkogel lies on the edge of town and is one of Lower Austria’s most valuable nature reserves. Its species-rich dry grassland is home to rare plants and animals. For longer hikes, consider the circular trails from Guntramsdorf-Thallern to Jubiläumswarte or Wilhelmswarte: they are about 9 to 12 kilometres long and take approximately three to four hours. The distance and duration provide a rough guide for planning an outing of several hours.

Windradlteich is one of the market town’s main recreational areas. Guntramsdorf also has a Nordic walking park with five circular routes. These offer different ways to get active alongside the longer circular hikes.

There is also a route for cyclists: the Weingartenradweg is signposted along its entire length. It runs between its connections to the Thermenradweg (EuroVelo 9) at Guntramsdorf and Bad Vöslau.

Heuriger culture and Jakobi Days

The long-standing Heuriger wine tavern culture shapes social life in Guntramsdorf. Local cuisine and winegrowing are at the heart of shared experiences. The Jakobi Days are a seasonal highlight: this wine festival takes place every year in late July, when local winemakers serve their wine in Kirchenplatz. If you would like to combine your stay with the festival, check the exact event dates in advance.
