Orth an der Donau: Castle, Culture and Floodplains
Accommodation in Orth an der Donau
Orth an der Donau can be explored through two main themes: its architectural and local history, and the Danube floodplains with their habitats. Orth Castle is home to the visitor centre of the Danube-Auen National Park and the museum of the market town of Orth an der Donau. National park topics and local history share a home there; other aspects of a stay range from biographies connected to the town to trails and the river landscape.
Orth Castle and Local History
A wooden staircase dating from the 14th century is part of the castle. For a long time, Orth Castle was regarded as a largely overlooked architectural gem of the Renaissance. The staircase is one historical detail of the building; the Renaissance classification describes the castle as a whole. The parish church of Orth an der Donau also has its own connection to local history: it is dedicated to Saint Michael.
At museumORTH, two biographies connected to the town take centre stage in different ways: those of Anni Rosar and Karl Schiske. A room installation is dedicated to actress Anni Rosar, whose roots were in Orth. The southwest tower of museumORTH is a memorial to Karl Schiske, the internationally acclaimed composer from Orth. The room installation and memorial offer different perspectives on remembrance, expanding the picture of local cultural history to include art and music.
River Floodplains, Wildlife and Trails
The national park exhibition “In the Flow” explains how the river floodplain landscape formed and the ecological processes that continue to shape it today. During a walk around the Schlossinsel floodplain experience grounds, visitors can discover characteristic habitats, animals and plants of the river landscape. European pond turtles, several native snake species, amphibians and European ground squirrels can be seen there. The exhibition focuses on the development and processes of the floodplains; the walk on Schlossinsel complements this perspective with habitats and specific animal groups on display.
The landscape itself is also shaped by change: two side channels in the Orth floodplains have been reconnected to the Danube. A hiking route in Orth an der Donau runs partly along the free-flowing Danube. This offers different perspectives on the river landscape: the walk on Schlossinsel focuses on habitats and species, while the hiking route follows the river for part of the way.
On the Water and the Danube Cycle Path
The Danube-Auen National Park’s combined experience of a Tschaike boat trip and a floodplain forest walk starts at the Tschaike/Danube harbour boarding point in Orth an der Donau. It includes a round trip on the Danube aboard the Tschaike, followed by a guided walk in the floodplain forest. The dates listed for 2026 run from 1 April to 30 October; check availability for a later season. The Tschaike is a 20-metre-long replica of a Danube ship from 1530. It can be rowed on request.
Orth an der Donau is also an easy-to-place destination for cyclists: the municipality lies directly on the Danube Cycle Path, Passau–Vienna–Budapest. This means travel planning can include both a named long-distance cycle route and a seasonal water-based experience followed by a forest walk.
