Discover Marchegg
Accommodation in Marchegg
Marchegg offers cultural and historical attractions as well as nature-related themes to consider when planning a stay. The castle, town museum and remains of the town walls sit alongside information about nature tourism and the floodplain trail. This lets you decide in advance whether your trip will focus on architectural history, nature observation or a mix of both interests.
Castle and Town History
Marchegg Castle offers two clearly distinct points in time in its architectural history. In 1629, Paul Pálffy had it converted into a moated castle. From 1733, the Counts Pálffy redesigned the castle in the Baroque style as an elegant country residence. These dates mark different phases: its conversion into a moated castle and its later Baroque redesign. If you are interested in historic architecture, you can use this sequence as a guiding thread when exploring the castle.
The surviving remains of the town walls are up to eight metres high. A route leads from Marchegg Castle along the town walls to the church, the Powder Tower and other sights in the town. Together, the height and route offer two different perspectives on the town’s history: its surviving structures and a sequence of named stops. Check the route and access using local information.
Museum and Digital Tours
Marchegg Town Museum is divided into three sections, housed in the old customs house, the Wagenburg and the granary. This three-part layout makes the museum easy to understand through its three named buildings. Check the current opening hours before visiting, as opening arrangements may change.
For the tours, the “Ortsspaziergänge” app offers audio stories, historical photos and 360° images, as well as further information about sights and historical events. Audio, images and additional information offer different ways to explore the tours. If you enjoy exploring historic sites with this kind of content, you can include the app in your plans as a digital supplement.
Nature Tourism and Floodplain Trail
The Storchenhaus Marchegg, located in Marchegg Castle, is a nature tourism information centre for the Marchfeld region. It offers guided tours around Marchegg Castle, into the Lower March Floodplains and in the surrounding area of the diverse Marchfeld region. The named areas of focus range from the surroundings of the castle to the floodplains and the wider Marchfeld area. Check current dates for guided tours before travelling.
Another way to experience nature is the floodplain trail in the floodplain reserve on Unkenweg. It offers walks along boardwalks and provides information about the floodplain and its flora and fauna; nature can be observed from viewing platforms. The Storchenhaus tours cover several areas, while the floodplain trail focuses on a named route with boardwalks, information and viewing platforms. As trail conditions may change, check local information before your visit.
