Discover Jedenspeigen: Castle, Wine and History
Accommodation in Jedenspeigen
Jedenspeigen combines a striking castle complex with wine experiences, historic cellars and memorial sites. If you are looking for a hotel in Jedenspeigen, you can plan your stay around the focus of your trip: the castle’s architectural history, the cellar lane and wine tastings appeal to different interests; the church, memorial stone and panoramic trail add to the picture of the town. Before booking, you can consider which themes interest you most.
Jedenspeigen Castle and its architectural history
Jedenspeigen Castle is a massive, two-storey quadrangular building with a moat. Its history includes several construction phases: the castle was destroyed in the 15th century. Shortly before 1600, the Kollonitsch family had the present-day castle rebuilt on the remains of the older structure. Two periods are therefore important for understanding its history: the destruction and the later reconstruction, which incorporated older building elements.
The castle contains features that point to the remains of a late medieval fortress: a castle dungeon, remnants of a raised entrance in the tower and the wheel of a drawbridge. These clues add older traces to the building’s history. Visitors interested in historic structures will find several aspects to consider here: the form of the present-day castle, its reconstruction and the surviving evidence of a medieval fortress.
Wine shop and cellar lane
The wine shop is located on the ground floor of the castle and offers tastings of wines from Jedenspeigen and Sierndorf an der March, as well as from selected Slovak winemakers. If you would like to make a tasting the occasion for your stay, check the opening dates before your trip.
The Jedenspeigen cellar lane stretches for about 600 metres and includes historic wine-press houses and vaulted cellars. The cellars are open only during events or guided tours. Check locally whether a suitable tour is scheduled for your visit. The wine shop and cellar lane thus offer two different ways to explore the subject of wine: a tasting and historic cellars with limited access.
Church, memorial stone and panoramic trail
A side aisle was added to St. Martin’s Parish Church in 1858/59 according to plans by Viennese architect Franz Sitte, and the church was remodelled. The memorial stone between Jedenspeigen and Dürnkrut commemorates the fateful Austrian battle of 1278 between Rudolf I of Habsburg and Ottokar II, King of Bohemia. The two subjects differ in period and content: the church is notable for a 19th-century structural alteration, while the memorial stone recalls a medieval historical event.
The Wine Panorama Hiking Trail leads to the Pope’s Chapel. From there, the panoramic view stretches across the battlefield of the largest knightly battle in Central Europe to the Little Carpathians in Slovakia. Here, the landscape view is combined with a view of an area shaped by history. For travellers who would like to include a viewpoint as well as historic buildings in their plans, the trail is a destination in its own right.
Medieval festival and getting there
The medieval festival in Jedenspeigen lasts two days and has been held every two years in mid-August since 2003. The programme includes a large jousting tournament, market life, a children’s camp and other performances; the jousting tournament is held on horseback. Attendance is reported at 10,000 each time. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates for your travel dates.
For rail travel, the ÖBB S1 North line runs via Vienna and Gänserndorf to Jedenspeigen station. If you plan to use this service, check the timetable for your travel day. Castle history, wine, historic memorial sites, panoramic views and the festival offer different reasons to choose Jedenspeigen as a destination; which of these matters most for your stay depends on your interests and travel dates.
