Accommodation in Höflein near Bruck an der Leitha
Höflein combines winegrowing, history and nature. The cellar lanes and traditional wine taverns reflect the local wine culture; the Villa Rustica and St. Ulrich fortified church offer different historical perspectives. There are also paths and natural areas with their own distinct features. When planning your trip, consider whether you are particularly interested in winegrowing, architectural history or nature.
Villa Rustica, Small Fort and Fortified Church
The Villa Rustica in Aubüheln is a Roman country estate, probably dating from the 4th century AD. Its exceptionally well-preserved heating system is particularly noteworthy. The villa is set up as an open-air museum; check accessibility before your visit. A small fort was built on the prominent hill of Höflein’s Kirchenberg to protect a road militarily. The two sites offer different perspectives: the Villa Rustica represents a country estate with preserved heating technology, while the small fort was built to protect a road.
St. Ulrich fortified church has a Romanesque nave, an early Gothic tower and a Baroque interior. Several stylistic periods therefore come together in this building. This gives the church a different architectural focus from the Villa Rustica: here, Romanesque, early Gothic and Baroque features are defining, while the villa is a Roman country estate with its heating system.
Winegrowing and Cellar Lanes
Höflein is one of the largest winegrowing villages in the Carnuntum wine region. Around 180 hectares of vineyards are cultivated by 140 families. The village also has five cellar lanes, with cellars built deep into the hillside. In Höflein, 16 families run traditional wine taverns. Classic wines, sparkling wine and grape spirits are still considered something special in Höflein. The local wine culture can therefore be explored from several perspectives: through the cultivated land and the families who work it, as well as through the cellar architecture and the wine taverns.
A special experience combines winegrowing with local and cultural history. The Kollmann distillery offers a guided short walk through the cellar lanes. Along the way, you can learn about the village, the Carnuntum area, Roman history and winegrowing. This is followed by an introduction to the world of schnapps distilling at the Destithek, with tastings of fine spirits, liqueurs and fruit nectar. The experience can be booked for groups of eight or more; arrange it before your trip.
Discovery Trails and Nature near Höflein
The Höflein Bee Discovery Trail features three information boards, a log hive and an insect hotel. It is near the Villa Rustica; you can park your car at a clearing in the shelterbelt. The Höflein Wine Trail is accessible by car, with free parking available, and can also be reached by bus. The two trails have different focuses: one draws attention to bees and beneficial insects, the other to winegrowing and ways of getting to the trail.
The VIA.VINUM Höflein circular trail also has a connection to nature: it passes the Rotenbergen dry grassland natural monument. The Rotenbergen vineyard area includes an old gravel pit with valuable dry grassland. In spring, the protected pasqueflower blooms there in violet. If seeing it in bloom is important to your plans, spring is the right time of year to visit. The natural monument, dry grassland and bee trail offer different themes to help you plan your excursions.
Plan a Stay That Suits You
If you are looking for a hotel in Höflein, one specific question can help with your plans: should your stay focus mainly on winegrowing and cellar lanes, the different architectural styles, or nature? If you would like to see the pasqueflower, take its spring blooming season into account as well.
