Fresach offers a range of options for a stay: hiking on the Mirnock, nature topics relating to crayfish, and cultural and historical insights into Protestantism. If you are looking for a hotel, first consider which of these aspects of the town you would like to shape your trip. A long circular hike, trails by the stream and the history of the Evangelical Diocesan Museum represent different ways to spend time in Fresach.

Hiking on the Mirnock and along the Weirerbach

Route 190, the Mirnock hiking trail, is a circular route starting at the Gasthof Klammer. The walking time is about six hours, so allow a large part of the day for the loop. The trail passes the unstaffed Gotzeralpe and leads to the “Kalten Brunn” viewpoint, from where you can see Lake Millstatt and the Hohe Tauern. The walking time and viewpoint provide two concrete reference points for planning your day.

Another distinctive feature of a summit hike is the 30 steps of the “Scala Paradisi”: they lead up the final stretch to the summit. A trail along the Weirerbach runs through woodland and meadows. Its features include boardwalks, small viewing platforms and resting places. In Fresach, the stream is a natural habitat for crayfish. The Mirnock hiking trail therefore focuses on the circular route and its viewpoint, while the stream landscape and trail route shape the character of the Weirerbach.

Nature topics and special trails

The educational trail of the Krebsenwandermeile introduces visitors to the stone crayfish and related species. This ties in with the crayfish for which the Weirerbach is a habitat: both topics focus on crayfish species and their habitats. The trail by the stream passes through woodland and meadows, while the Krebsenwandermeile focuses on sharing knowledge. This lets you explore nature topics both through a landscape and through individual species.

Stana’s Nature Adventure Trail is on the southern slope of the Mirnock at an elevation of 580 to 1,300 m; the Mirnock is 2,104 m high. These elevations distinguish the area of the adventure trail from the mountain’s summit height. There is also a Kneipp circuit in the moor pool at Stanamoor. Together, these activities showcase different nature topics in Fresach: elevation and mountain scenery, habitats by a stream, and the moor pool.

Protestant history and local culture

The center of the permanent exhibition at the Evangelical Diocesan Museum Fresach is devoted to clandestine Protestantism. The exhibition traces the history of Protestantism in Austria from the Reformation onward. This adds a distinct cultural and historical focus alongside hiking and nature. The Fresach Lenten cloth offers another perspective on local culture: it was completed in 2009 and made using the traditional technique of painting on linen.

The Kartatsche is also part of the town’s history. An October 2024 report records that a Kartatsche has existed in the municipality of Fresach since 1936. In 2011, the local and regional development association in Fresach set out to bring the Kartatsche, which was then out of operation, back into use. These details tell of its long history in the municipality and a later plan to resume operations.

European Tolerance Talks

Fresach is the venue for the “European Tolerance Talks,” whose main themes change each year. If the talks are important to your travel plans, check the current programme separately. Together with the museum and the Lenten cloth, they offer another culture-focused point of interest to help you choose the focus of your stay.
