St. Egyden combines church and local history with specific cultural landmarks. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, the historic churches, a memorial to Pavle Kernjak and religious traditions can help you get a clearer picture of the destination. The House of Archaeology on Kathreinkogel and the old farmhouses on the southern slope also give the village a distinct character. This offers several points of interest to consider when planning your trip: church art, memorial sites, archaeology or local events.

Churches, Art and Architectural History

The former parish church of St. Egyden was first mentioned in a document in 1318. It features Romanesque elements and a Gothic choir; the Baroque high altar was signed by Matthias Pauer in 1757. This brings several distinct aspects of the building into focus: its early documentary mention, its architectural features and a signed work of art. If you are interested in church architecture and furnishings, these offer several specific points of interest.

The parish church of St. Egyden was designed by Josef Tusch, an architect born in St. Egyden. Anzolo Fuga from Murano made the church’s stained-glass windows. The new parish church of St. Aegidius was consecrated to the saint in 1973. Together, these bring architecture, artistic design and a precisely dated consecration into focus.

Memorials and Religious Traditions

Pavle Kernjak is also connected with St. Egyden: the Carinthian Slovene composer lived here. A memorial plaque to him is located on the south side of the church in St. Egyden. It was donated on the occasion of his 100th birthday and blessed on 18 September 1999. The Schütz Cross commemorates a different aspect of religious life: it replaced an earlier wayside shrine that had been a station on the procession route in St. Egyden.

The annual Corpus Christi procession to Humitz Church begins at the parish church in St. Egyden. A church publication from 2011 mentions that the church choir has held regular Advent concerts since 1995. Corpus Christi and Advent thus represent different times of year. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these occasions, check the local dates in advance.

Archaeology and Directions

The House of Archaeology is located beside the church on Kathreinkogel. Early Christian finds are on display there, adding a distinct perspective to the church and local history. If you plan to visit, check the opening hours in advance.

For directions, as a rough guide: if you drive from Velden towards Ludmannsdorf, you will reach St. Egyden after about ten minutes. Below the church, turn right towards Treffen/Trebinja. Another useful landmark is the walking route to the summit plateau of Kathreinkogel: from the Kreuzwirt car park, it takes about 30 minutes on foot. These time estimates refer to different starting points and modes of transport: an approximate driving time from the direction of Velden and a walking time from the car park mentioned.

The landscape is also part of what makes the place distinctive: in St. Egyden, ancient farmhouses nestle into the southern slope.
