Klopeiner See lies among the rolling forests of the Jaun Valley and reaches a maximum depth of 48 metres. Sankt Kanzian Am Klopeiner See brings together themes of the lake and landscape with trails and cultural history. When planning your stay, it is worth considering the different highlights: specific rules apply on the water, while viewpoints, outdoor activities and historic sites appeal to different interests.

The Lake and Rules on the Water

Thanks to its ring sewer system and deep-water drainage, the lake has near-drinking-water quality. As water conditions can change, check the latest local information before swimming. At Klopeiner See, the sport fishing season runs every year from 1 April to 15 November; check the local regulations again before fishing. Only rowboats are permitted on the lake; check this rule before launching a boat. Fishing is therefore limited to a recurring annual period, whereas the boating rule specifies which type of boat is permitted.

Views and History Along the Trails

The Slow Trail Kitzelberg starts on the western shore of Klopeiner See. From its viewing platform, you can see Klopeiner See, Turnersee and the entire Jaun Valley. The Gracarca Cultural Trail takes in six stops in total. Gracarca was home to an important Iron Age hilltop settlement from the 9th to the 1st century BC. The Slow Trail focuses on the panoramic views, while Gracarca is associated with a settlement history dating back far into the past.

Trails and Activities

At Kleinsee, you can walk or cycle the loop; the continuous promenade at Klopeiner See, by contrast, is for strolling and relaxing. The two options are by different lakes: the loop goes around Kleinsee, while the promenade is at Klopeiner See. Stand-up paddleboarding is available in the municipality of St. Kanzian. A mountain bike flow trail descends from Steinerberg.

Leisure and Culture

The Walderlebniswelt covers an area of more than 20,000 m². It includes a 25-metre-high treetop walk and a 500 m² indoor play area. These three measurements describe different aspects: the overall area of the attraction, the height of the trail and the floor area of the indoor section. Another leisure highlight is the Kärntner Badehaus at Klopeiner See, which has six different saunas and a heated infinity pool outdoors.

The cultural highlights also differ in form and period. A Roman dugout canoe, around 1,700 years old, was discovered at the bottom of Klopeiner See. The church in Wasserhofen contains the mural “Ecce Homo” by Carinthian artist Valentin Oman, created in 2001. Alongside the Iron Age hilltop settlement at Gracarca, these offer three distinct points of interest: a settlement, a Roman find on the lakebed and a mural in a church.
