Unterburg on Lake Klopein
Accommodation in Unterburg on Lake Klopein
Unterburg on Lake Klopein brings together historical themes, excursion trails and a focus on wellness by the lake for trip planning. The Gracarca Cultural Trail covers several periods of regional history; at Georgiberg, local history, the church and described hiking destinations come together. The Kärntner Badehaus adds a specific wellness offering to this selection. When looking for a hotel, you can first decide whether culture, a particular circuit or the Badehaus should be the focus of your stay.
Cultural history in Unterburg
The Gracarca Cultural Trail comprises six stops covering different periods of regional history. The trail therefore follows several historical themes. The early development of tourism in Unterburg dates back to the late 19th century; three guesthouses are mentioned there in 1894. The cultural trail and the early guesthouses thus represent two different ways of exploring local history: historical periods and the beginnings of tourism.
Georgiberg: church, place name and historical traces
Georgiberg is 624 metres high and lies southeast of Lake Klopein. The settlement at its foot was named Unterburg after the lake was called St. George’s Lake in the 13th century, after the church or castle. Georgi Church was first mentioned in a written record between 1060 and 1070. Clearly visible rampart-like rises remain on the western side of the mountain. They date from no earlier than the 15th century and may have served as fortifications against the Turks. Georgiberg therefore brings together an early written mention, the later history of the name and a possible function of the rises that must be interpreted with caution.
Compare circular routes by length and course
The Georgiberg tour begins at the distinctive bend in Georgibergstraße south of Unterburg and leads to the small church on Georgiberg, with its wishing bell. The two described circular routes can be compared by length, starting point and intermediate destinations. A 4.94-kilometre circular route starts at the lido in Unterburg, follows the Gracarca forest road to Grabelsdorf and the Daniel Chapel, then returns to Unterburg. The 10.5-kilometre circuit begins on the Südpromenade in Unterburg, leads to Kitzelberg and Unternarrach, then continues to Grabelsdorf-Süd and returns to Unterburg via the forest road. It is a little more than twice as long as the 4.94-kilometre route; the stated starting points and intermediate destinations also differ. The regional route brochure describing these two circuits dates from 2007. As trail conditions can change, check local conditions before setting out.
