Rieding: Hiking Trails and Cultural Sites
Accommodation in Rieding
Rieding brings together local history, commemorative culture, and hiking destinations. Notable sites include the branch church of St. Oswald, the Rieding War Memorial, and the Madonna am Walde Chapel. The Poms Waterfall and several named trails add to the picture of the surrounding area. The different starting points and directions are useful when planning a hike.
Hiking Trails and Nature Destinations
The Poms Waterfall above Rieding is protected as a natural monument. From the parking area by the Waldrast Inn, signposted Trail No. 591 leads to the Poms Waterfall. As trail conditions can change, check the current conditions before setting out.
Trail No. 560 starts in Wolfsberg’s old town by the Bamberghaus and leads via Schoberkogel and Raucheck to the Waldrast Inn. There, you can stop for refreshments. At the turnoff to the Poms Waterfall, the trail to the right, No. 592, follows the Ernestinensteig in the direction of Steinschneider. The route from Wolfsberg and the directional information at the junction therefore identify different reference points for planning your hike.
The Großhöllerhütte can also be reached via a separate route: from the Koralpe parking area, the trail leads via the Poms Waterfall. The trails are well maintained, and the hut is easy to reach. To choose your route, you can distinguish between the stated destinations: Trail 591 leads to the Poms Waterfall, Trail 560 to the Waldrast Inn, and Trail 592 in the direction of Steinschneider.
Church, Memorial, and Chapel
The branch church of St. Oswald in Rieding was first mentioned in a document in 1383. The Rieding War Memorial consists of a glacial erratic with a marble inscription plaque. It was erected in memory of those killed or missing in the two world wars. Thus, a historic landmark in the church and a monument expressly dedicated to remembrance represent different aspects of the area’s history.
A memorial service organized by the Ă–KB takes place once a year on Easter Monday. It includes a festive church service, followed by the laying of a wreath at the Rieding War Memorial. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the specific event date locally in advance.
The Madonna am Walde Chapel is on the Koralpe, about 1.5 kilometers above the village of Rieding. Its building is more than 200 years old and was originally a flax-breaking hut. The chapel’s location above the village and its original use give it a distinct landscape and historical connection among Rieding’s destinations.
Getting Your Bearings in the Area
The Koralm Road L 149 runs from the Gemmersdorfer Road (L 140) in Maildorf via Rieding and Waldrast to the valley station of the Koralmlifte, east of the HipflhĂĽtte. This named sequence of roads places Rieding between Maildorf, Waldrast, and the area around the valley station. It complements the specific trail descriptions, which start at the Waldrast Inn, the Poms Waterfall, or a junction, depending on the destination.
During your stay, you can treat the historic sites and hiking destinations as different points of interest: the church and war memorial are in Rieding, while the Madonna am Walde Chapel is above the village on the Koralpe. For the trails, the trail number, starting point, and destination help you distinguish between routes and tailor your plans to your chosen destination.
