Keutschach Am See: UNESCO Pile-Dwelling Heritage and the Four-Lake Valley
Accommodation in Keutschach Am See
Keutschach Am See combines prehistoric cultural history with a landscape of lakes and moorland. The prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement in Lake Keutschach has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps” since 2011 and is Austria’s oldest known pile-dwelling settlement to date. The area also features buildings dating from widely separated periods, themed trails and a four-lake valley. You can get to know the place through its cultural history, landscape and specific walking routes.
Pile-Dwelling History at Lake Keutschach
The World Heritage display at Keutschach municipal office provides information about the prehistoric settlement in the lake and displays original finds from the site. The pile-dwelling history is made tangible both through its UNESCO status and through the actual finds. If you would like to include the display in your visit, check in advance on current visiting arrangements.
The History of the Local Buildings
Two buildings mark very different periods. St. Nikolai Keutschach Church was built in 1150 and is dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Keutschach Castle was built in the first decades of the 16th century and is now the administrative and cultural centre of the village and municipality. The two construction periods are several centuries apart: the church dates to the 12th century, while the castle belongs to a much later building period. The castle’s historical significance is also linked to its present-day role for the village and municipality.
Four-Lake Valley and Moorland
Keutschach Am See lies in the unspoilt Four-Lake Valley, with Rauschelesee, Lake Keutschach, Hafnersee and Baßgeigensee. The prehistoric pile-dwelling settlement is also located in Lake Keutschach. Keutschach Moor has been part of the international Ramsar Convention for many years. The lakes and moorland offer different points of interest for nature lovers: the valley’s four named bodies of water on the one hand, and the moorland’s inclusion in the convention on the other.
Trails and Excursion Destinations
The Keutschach Moor Nature Trail is a seven-kilometre circular hiking route. Twelve information panels explain the sensitive moorland habitat. The Keutschacher Seental Natura Trail is ten kilometres long, very flat and easy to manage with a pushchair. Comparing the route lengths, the Moor Nature Trail is three kilometres shorter; its circular route and information panels offer a different combination from the explicitly very flat Natura Trail. The length, route format and stated features give you practical criteria for choosing. Before setting out, it is advisable to check current trail conditions.
The Löffler Loop Keutschach adds a cycling route to the walking trails: it starts at Keutschach Castle and follows a cycle path to St. Nikolai. The Pyramidenkogel Trail Keutschach starts at the panoramic information board at the municipal office and leads via the ruins of Reifnitz Castle to the observation tower on Pyramidenkogel. Another feature of the tower is a 120-metre-long covered adventure slide, described as the highest in Europe. If you plan to visit the tower or use the slide, check current operating conditions in advance.
